1st Oil Change

I Bought this 2001 Boxster 1 week ago
I just got insurance and title work done.

Today I decided to change the brakes and Oil

All 4 pads were worn through to the sensor

All went well with the breaks... now onto the oil change

Good news previous owner replaced the original oil pan plug with a magnetic one

Next came the filter I bought a manns cartridge filter fully expecting to find the stock casing that holds the filter

I found this instead

Can anyone tell me if they have seen this before and will it harm the boxster?

I believe the P.O. screwed in an adapter that allows the K&N to screw on

Much shorter than the stock one

Any Advice?

Many have done something like this to get better filtering the stock filters bypass and it allows dirt to recirculate to some extent.

Looks like you bought a well cared for car. The mag plug and the probable LNE spin on adapter are nice upgrades! Check your K&N filter part number and see if it cross references to a NAPA Gold 1042 filter. The NAPA Gold is the recommended filter and is what I run, then cut that filter open and inspect for debris.

You can get one at Harbor Freight.

FYI: the "brake sensor" is nothing more than a "U" shaped piece of wire.
When the pad wears down enough, the bare wire makes contact with the rotor, grounding the circuit and tripping the brake wear light.

They are simple to make. ;)

I bought the Longacre Oil Filter Cutter (LA77750) which worked really well.
After cutting the filter open, you need a blade to cut the paper free from the filter.

I was using the NAPA Gold 1042 and am now using the Platinum version which NAPA claims is better for synthetic.

You can use a muffler pipe cutter from Autozone, they loan for free if you do not want to purchase a tool you'll use infrequently.
