chopping my stick

Have been playing about with gear changes and realize ,for me anyway, it is a lot smoother gear change holding the stick half way down when changing gear. This leads me to thinking about chopping the stick down to achieve the slicker changing I am experiencing.

Has anyone any experience of doing this , and how did you find it. thanks

i haven't tried it or heard of someone who did, but you can go ahead and try, as stock shifters assembly are fairly cheap (at least on this side of to pond)
Porsche boxster carrera 911 shifter race tequipmen
also a short shifter is a very common mod on these cars. (short as in the travel of the stick between gears)

I think I recall that Ben tried shortening the height of his factory shift knob:

I personally love the stock knob height (combined with the modestly shorter throw of the 997 shift mechanism I installed) on my 5-speed 2001 Boxster. When I tried temporarily running with a lower positioned, duct tape ball shift knob for a while (necessary for me to keep driving the car while refinishing my shift knob/boot), I found it hard to get into gear sometimes due to inadequate leverage. The conclusion for me is that shorter throws are not necessarily better.

If you have trouble getting it into gear you should check the engine mount. Hard shifting is one of the symptoms of a cracked and crumbling mount.
