Radar detectors........
Guys,
Any of you have any good radar detectors in your Boxsters? I bought a Valentine V1 and a V1 display mirror for my S and am having one of my clients do the install for me. It will be hidden and the mirror will have the LED displays for the V1. Very cool in my opinion. Any others out there? :) |
The guy who started the V1 remote display was Jim Powell for BMW mirrors, as he is a BMW owner. I was going to send him my mirror a year or so ago but never got around to it. Now he will not do it as there is a California company that sells the mirror he modifies.
One of our local C4S (coupe) owners has it. He said it was hard to see the display in the daytime. So I thought it would be even harder to see it in a Boxster with the top down. Let us know how it works out, as I might change my mind. Where are they going to hide the main unit so that the laser will work? Jeff |
I have the V1 with the factory remote display, works great for me.

Beltronics 980. I think it out performs the V1 and this model is 2 years old now. Typical different sounding beep alerts for the different bands (x, ka etc). Good detection from rear also....however it does not tell you that the alert is coming frorn front or rear.
Has anyone used one of these ? It is a radar reflector/blocker. http://www.beltronics.com/lp905.html |
They can help you in giving you a little time to slow down. My brother runs LIDAR in middle Georgia, they shoot the cars from the rear as they go under the overpass he sits on. This product probably would not help in this situation. His LIDAR gun is pretty cool, it takes a digital photo of the back of your car showing the date and speed on the photo. Pretty hard to beat in court.
For a front shoot this product decreases the distance needed to clock you, that is how you have a little time to slow down. |

I have a built in Bell in the 986 and a V1 in my Altima and a V1 on the Hayabusa they both work great but I prefer the V1 it tells you where they are and that is priceless

I always try and mount my detectors as high as possible in the vehicle (usually just under the sun tinting as in our Explo pic below. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1496435500.jpg |

Years ago I recall stories of the police using radar detector detectors in states where detectors were illegal. I wonder if the units have gotten smarter or if they police have discontinued the practice. I recall a friend who had a 200Z Turbo and he had a throw-away detector he kept in the glove compartment while his good one was hidden. If stopped they would confiscate the detector which he would happily hand them.
I know entering VA there are signs reminding you that detectors are prohibited. |

We did a fair amount of research in 2015 before driving the cars from Texas to our retirement home in NY. Based on what we learned, all detectors are still detectable. Additionally, now that cars are using onboard radar and LEOs are using non radar based fixed camera locations, etc., it can be argued that the radar detector's usefulness has diminished.
Having said that, our V1s still prove very useful in NYS. Not every town, city or state agency can afford to continuously upgrade their LEO's equipment. Still a lot of Ka in use here. If I remember correctly, New Jersey does not ban radar detectors, but they do have a law against having anything attached to the inside of the windshield. We took the detectors down when we passed through VA on our way to NY. Never had a problem in NJ. |
Here in Quebec, radar detectors are illegal. The Waze app for iPhone or Android is not. I use this free app where the data, including maps, best routes, construction zones an yes, police presence, is indicated on your gps driven map. It's crowd sourced and I have found it quite reliable.

I use Waze in major city's or traveling in the states. I have a escort 9500i that receives firmware updates via the computer. The escort also has all photo radar locations marked and can pick up laser. Needless to say it has saved me countless times

Magnetron
I seem to remember a project back in the early 1980's using a pulsed magnetron hidden under the grill to always project the right number of pulses to make a radar gun read 55mph. I only ever saw one of these installed in a Audi 5000S at Redstone NASA
|
Have an older V1. The frequencies have gotten so crowded with lane monitors, adaptive cruise control and other devices that I find I rarely use my V1. Waze is my constant companian
|
Be careful with Waze. No longer useful or reliable in my area. The law enforcement professionals set up shop on the road, open the waze app, and simply tap the "Not There" icon whenever they pop up.
