oil consumption

Just got back from w/e away and noticed that the oil level seems to have dropped . It is the middle on the electronic level, and im sure it was on or near the top level mark last time I

noticed the level. It does not smoke at all, exhaust is black/dark brown colour, but not obviously sooty, and their are no leaks. so a bit of a mystery. What would an acceptable oil consumption on these cars be, apart from zero . The engine has 110 k but has been rebuilt in 2014, rings, mains etc. Thanks for any info

Don't know your year but if you have dip stick trust that
My Gauge can display different readings just turned the ignition on,off,on again. Not turning the motor over
If the Gauge is your only option try rolling car a bit to see if level fluctuates
If you are Sure you have lost oil check coolant tank for mix
Tail pipe for burning oil residue

Only trust...

.....the oil level after the car has been sitting for three day, on level ground, in the same spot, for repeatability.

Don't freak out about oil levels. These cars can survive a completely "empty" display without damage. As long as there is at least one light lit, you are more than fine.

By nature of their design, the boxer engine will use a bit of oil. Esp if your car sits for multiple days in a row (like only used on weekends). Oil can seep past the rings and gets pushed out the exhaust, sometimes as a big cloud on start-up, sometimes without being noticed. Nothing to worry about since it's designed into the engine if it's not excessive.

Just be sure to monitor it. If you're watching based on the digital display, you might be catching it at extreme edges - it might have been just at the top the last time you looked and might have been just under a mark when you checked again so a lower mark was displayed. Digital gauges don't show margins, it's this bar or that one.

However, if the consumption picks up, you might be in early onset of an AOS failure. Consumption begins slowly if the AOS has a small tear, so the AOS might be giving you a warning sign before the famous James Bond smoke screen which signifies massive failure.
