Were you into Hot Wheels as a kid?

As fellow car guys, were you into Hot Wheels and other car toys as a kid?

I had the orange track and blue couplings and a huge collection. Wish I still had them...:(

Hot Wheels were the best. My grandparents bought my first set in 68 ish, when they first came out. I got another set for Christmas that had a battery operated building that spun up and kept the cars going around the circuit indefinitely. That was my first introduction to throttle control.

The box is a bit dusty, but still has all the track and accessories.

We even had Sizzlers and Fat Track, but I don't have any of my cars handy.

Sweet Sixteen

Looks like I have 13 of the original 16 that were released in 1968. I'm sure I had a Corvette and a Mustang. I defn have the Boss Hoss Mustang (Eleanor inspiration), so maybe they're in my brother or sister's case. The only 1 I know I don't have of the original 16 is the Fleetside.

My Camaro is a basket case, in need of a full restoration. But I have the Heavy Chevy version.

I sure was. I used to play with the numerous ones I had to pretend being in a little city.

Also, model cars. :)

Hot Wheels were second to Legos for me but I still had a huge collection of Hot Wheels. I use to take a vise grip to the ones I didn't like to make them look like they got in a wreck. I also use to shoot them with my BB gun or burn them. I was a lot like that kid in Toy Story. I guess I haven't grown up yet because four decades later and I'm still destroying cars.

Oh of course! I had a huge collection but my mom sold the whole collection in a garage sale when I was in college. Sure wish I still had them, it would be fun for the grand kids!

How about Hess trucks? I remember getting them every Christmas.

One of the things I remember most about my childhood is every saturday my late father would take me in to town in Glasgow, Scotland where we lived and let me pick a hot wheels or a matchbox car. We would then go to a nearby cafe for a cake and a cola for the unboxing ceremony. Im sure he liked them as much as me

He must have kept that up till I was about 11 or 12 when I got too old for it.

I now find myself doing the same for my 2 boys who are 8 and 4.

I always look out for a yellow 986 but no joy as yet.

Dont know where all mine went but I seem to be forever standing on my sons collection lol

BIGJake111 08-08-2016 06:26 AM

As for hot wheels. Similar to yellows2000 every Friday when I was fairly young, likely before even going to school full time. I remember my mother taking me along to do errands on Fridays, to make up for the abysmal activity of grocery shopping if I behaved myself the whole time I would get a hot wheels and we would go to skins hot dogs (an excellent local hot dog joint.)

If there is anything you should never underestimate as a gift to another human being it is routine and consistency.

I was a Matchbox car kid. mine are all pretty beat up from much playing, and my grandson has them now.

These ones belonged to my Grandad.

Yes - and still am!

Hot Wheels -('68-'72 only - Spectraflame Years)

Before Hot Wheels I had Matchbox but dropped them like a rock when Hot Wheels came out. (I still kept the Matchbox yellow Jeep around as a pit vehicle).

Also loved HO slot cars and Plastic models.

Not so much Hot Wheels or Matchbox for me, but many, many hours racing HO scale slot cars. My brother and me had a nice track set up in the basement spread out over a ping-pong and picnic tables. We designed a long straight into the layout which resulted in many spectacular over the guardrail wipe outs (we improvised by adding a cardboard retaining wall at the end of the straight), and using our lap counter would stage 500 lap races. Great memories!

What if I am... WUZ!?

lkchris 08-09-2016 08:27 AM

I had a '49 Plymouth with a wind-up key on the bottom.

I'm old, and Hot Wheels hadn't happened yet.

dghii 08-09-2016 06:38 PM

Loved Hot Wheels but first cool, metal cars were Corgi.

thstone 08-09-2016 07:17 PM

Yes, and I still have all of my original Hot Wheels from when I was a kid!

Jager 08-10-2016 06:23 PM

I loved my Hotwheels cars when I was a kid. Saved them in little blue plastic bins just like husker boxster has. The little bins then went into a case with a handle on it for carrying around to my friends houses to trade. Happily passed them on to my son when he was little (he's 20 now). Sadly he never had much interest in them. They couldn't compete with his dinosaurs! They are still around somewhere in his room.

Porsche9 08-11-2016 07:35 AM

I'm still into Hotwheel cars. I have all of them from when I was a kid, have a newer Porsche collection that's displayed in the garage. I recently acquire Gulf-Porsche 917K that sits on my desk at work. It gets a lot of attention with a decent number of people knowing what it is. Great conversation starter.
