Truth about Porsche parts prices?
 

Today I was perusing the interwebs and found a video of GasMonkey garage completing a 1991 Ferrarri F40. They upgraded the suspension with custom coil overs and they say they cost $1200. WTF? My 15 year old Boxster needs them but the Bilstein's cost between 2-3k. Am I missing something? I'm pretty sure the F40 coilovers didn't come from China or ebay.

How is it that you can buy a set for a camaro for the price of a single boxster coil over?

I'm not a mechanic, but I am an engineer and I don't understand the logic. Unless it's just brand loyal logic and the real parts are somewhere under a different part number with realistic prices. Anyone?

The price tag for low volume part manufacturing is phenomenally expansive at industrial level. Compared to high volume quantities. Factors that influence the final cost are often related to low volume material requirements, machine-tool set-up and programing, workforce training, inspection and logistics. Etc etc.

There is also the company who don't necessarily see the need to stock parts that they'll possibly never sell. Therefore passing this expanse to the end customers instead. Common tactics nowadays

Simple: Shops can get a significant discount off retail parts prices, depending upon the volume of business that they do with the supplier. Depending upon the part, it could be 30-50% off of retail.

Anything that is said on GasMonkey Garage should be taken with a large grain of salt.

How the hell do Bilstein Shocks cost 2 to 3k? Bilsteins cost $900 Shipped! Might wanna learn to shop around. Coil Overs for the 986 cost 1k to 3k. You can even have high end companies make custom coil overs for your specific needs for around 1500 dollars.

Everyone seems to think Porsche Parts cost a ton of money, when they don't. I've already done most basic Maintenance and use quality Bosche or Porsche OEM and the only thing I'm crying on, the cost of a single bearing (IMS). I've done Alternator, Starter, Battery, Clutch, RMS, AOS, Spark Plugs, Coil Packs, Hell I even roll 19x11" tires and they aren't too bad on cost.

The Bilstein PSS9 kit is what I'm looking at. Can't find it cheaper than $2200 from an unknown vendor. Below is another seller. What I'm saying is where are these custom places that will build me custom coilovers for $1500. Show me where these cost $900 shipped please. I'm here to buy.

Just sold a set of aftermarket performance coilovers for a Miata for $1,500 which is $600 less than the new price. No one sells decent coilovers for $1200.

Again, I fall foul. Godspeed makes coilover kits for 987's which have good reviews and sell for $900 online. Lets try again. I'm looking for an alternative to paying 3k for bilstein coilovers. I'm quite sure that someone has already done this leg work and has the magical info I'm looking for. IE. we're talking about part numbers people. Same part can be in different PN's and sell for vastly different prices.
So, I'm hoping that person reads this post.

I took that as you were looking at 3k Shocks. Not coil overs lol. I do see Bil's for a Boxster being 2k easy.

D2's are 1300, KSport which has really good reviews being a cheaper brand is 1100

I've heard lots of good stuff about the cheap KSport coilovers. I had D2's and loved them, but sold due to needing money. I'll prob go with KSport this time for the cheaper cost.
