Tailpipe tip shine?
Hi,
What are y'all using to shine up your tailpipe tips? I just bought a '99 basic and it's quite lovely, however the tailpipe tip is dull in comparison to the rest of the car. I googled and of course found a million products, decided to post here since there's different metals used for exhaust pipes and I don't have a clue as to what our B's are made of... |
I use Happich Simichrome polish.
I'm sure others have their favorites - I hope they will chime in... |
I use glass cleaner, and steel wool on mine.
|
I use basic Noxon all purpose metal cleaner, but interested to see what others are using that may be better.

Lol three replies already, and three different answers! Would it matter if I posted pics? Can't do it yet, at work...

I used Barkeeper's Friend to start and then Simichrome, making sure the tailpipe was cleaned of one product before using the other. I cleaned it last year for the first time since I bought my car new in 2003 and it still looks pretty good. My tailpipe is stainless steel and removes from the muffler with one bolt so it can be done sitting at a table - it's a 2003 S.

On a side note, I hit the Spell Check button instead of Submit Reply, it marked every word as a spelling error? :p |
everyone has favorite products...I worked for a custom motorcycle manufacturer for several years...we used a product, that I now swear by...Autosol. They have a variety of products and I would not use anything else....but, that's just one guy's opinion.
|
Autosol. This stuff is great.

Do you guys use Autosol for aluminum, or for stainless steel?
|
Who cares?! It's going to get dull again quickly. All the polishing makes it worse. Just drive the car.

Always wanted to have mine powder coated black, gave up the idea eventually. Actually does the trick naturally if unpolished. Beside there is nothing better looking than a thick and ugly dirty and carbonized performance lookin tailpipe :D RE Autosol. Yes, the best polisher I've tried also. Especially on AL... Autosol is yet the only abrasive that will give you "mirror-like" surface finishes with very little effort. Great prod, worth saying |
I used Autosol on mine, it's an Aluminium (yeah they even spell it properly on the packet! :P) polish but it worked fine and came up really easy.
|
Who else found the title of this thread hilarious, "Tail Pipe Tip Shine"?
If this were a Seinfeld episode the punch line would be, "Not that there is anything wrong with that";) |
"nothing better looking than a thick and ugly, dirty and carbonized, performance lookin tailpipe"
> I take my words back |
I like my pipes dirty
I just clean when I wash car. It's like detailing the engine, 100 miles later it's dirty again Unless your car just sits in the garage |

Brasso here. It's what I had laying around, and seemed to work just fine. Stainless steel polished aftermarket muffler and tips. I'm sure the original tips are also polished stainless steel, and would guess the original muffler is mill finished (not polished) stainless steel.
|
I just used Brasso this week, and am very happy with the results. The tailpipe looks new again.

I bought a very rough PSE and brought it back to life - I first used a 2" 320 grit Scotch Brite Polishing Ball on a power drill along with Blue Magic Metal Polish Cream. It took the top layer of grit off. I then used brake cleaner, Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish and applied this by hand using 0000 super fine steel wool . This cleaned it up more and added some shine. Lastly, I put several coat of Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish on by hand rubbing it in well then buffing it with a soft cloth. I would guess I put 10 to 12 hours into the polishing of it. Before and after.... I regularly get under the car to admire it! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psb3euurrj.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps7bx7awpf.jpg |
Holy cow, Chuck. That looks incredible. I think I have a new project for this weekend.

I have a Base with the single oval tip. I thought I'd get a head start by taking it off and polishing it. Having trouble getting the bolt off. At first I just thought it was bit rounded, but now it appears (from a position lying on my back) to be welded. Anyone have issues with this?

I gave up on polishing the muffler tips. When I did the Pedro hack I had the system thermal coated with a titanium finish. Job done!

The bolt is on the bottom on my 2003 Base. Can't imagine why they would weld it, but - oh well, getting the tip off to polish is not exactly a critical job.
Nice, Keith! I'd really like "Chuck level" shine as the redesigned rear bumper on the 03 has the vents which make the muffler more visible. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
