Weird whining noise?

So when i first start my 2001 S, it makes a high-pitched whining noise, but only after its been sitting a while. I turn the ignition off, and it sounds like a blower winding down. Then when i start it again right away, the whining sound is gone. This has been happening for a few days now. The whining noise will not stop unless i turn the car off. Any ideas?

The experts will tell you soon what is wrong or how to diagnose but I think it has to do with vacuum lines. Mine whines at different temps at startup but stops after maybe 30 seconds which is normal from what I understand. Full disclosure.....I am far from a expert!

Hello Snipershot,

from you description i think this could be the secondary air pump. I would recommend to put the car on a diagnosis system and checked your DTCs?

Regards, Markus

I Third Secondary Air Pump
If you are familiar with it, Cold starts it will run around 90 seconds, then turn off. Usually doesn't come on if you turn car off and restart or if engine is warm.

If you are hearing on top of the pump itself, a very high pitch wine, then it is the sealed bearing inside the pump (It's another IMSB - Ohh know!!)
It can be fixed by opening up pump, pulling out bearing and shooting grease into it.
Mine has been quite for a couple years now.

I agree

Mine did the exact same thing a year or two ago. Sounded like a high pitched vacuum cleaner behind me. Since then it has stopped and throws CEL about every 1-2 weeks for the SAI. I think I am just going to have it flashed ROW so I don't have to keep clearing codes, uneven idle at cold start or a $3000+ repair bill.
