2001 Boxster S - your thoughts?
 

Looking at a 2001 Boxster S for sale locally. 2nd owner car with 115k, asking $6500. Apart from a PPI any other thoughts? Is the price in the right rage? My last P was a 944 that I sold 25 years ago. I've caught the bug again.

It depends on condition, how it has been maintained and options. Research Edmunds, KBB and NADA for pricing expectations.

At this point, if AOS, MAF, Catalytic Converters, etc. haven't already been replaced, expect to do so soon.

IMO the 115k miles is good as a car that has been regularly driven. The price is below what I would expect for a properly maintained excellent condition Boxster S. The price is about where I would expect a good running Boxster S that is going to need to have some maintenance items taken care of, but no serious flaws. In other words, I'd pay $6,500 and expect to refresh the suspension, brakes, water pump, and maybe a new AOS. Lots of other considerations that can not be made with the minimal info you have given.

Don't buy it!
If that's what you can afford to spend on a car and you're thinking "Sweet a Porsche." It's going to cost a lot of money to get it current and right. If you can do the work yourself, it'll still cost a lot.

Do buy it! If it's a car that you can afford to have sit, either in the shop or in your garage and you want a very cool car.
Personally, I would spend the extra money up front and enjoy the car.

I'd say it depends. If you do your due diligence, get the PPI done and car seems to be in pretty good condition, go for it and enjoy! I picked up a 2001 S not too long ago with 133k on it. Didn't do a PPI :eek:, but did get a chance to talk to the mechanic that serviced the car for the past 10+ years and went through the service history with him in detail. Purchase price was similar to yours, but mine had regular maintenance and had the IMS replaced as well as clutch several years back. As the others say, have an emergency fund of $2k/year and you should be fine.

I also considered getting an S2000 as I've had one in the past, but they were almost double the price! I'm glad I got the boxster now and would again even if the prices were the same between the two. Porsche is just a much more refined car and I can't stop driving it!

Buy it. Boxster > other options and the risk of repairs.

Buy it. It's a lot of car for $6,500. You'll have a blast!

Buy it. Don't listen to them. It's more car for the money than any other car in the world. Period! I have a 2001 S H6 120k. This is the time to buy.

Iv just bought a Boxster S, Year 2000 for £5100 with full history and 95K miles

Had it 3 weeks and all is well. My advice for anyone wanting one is buy a looked after one with a service history and keep £1000 aside just incase.

Im factoring £1000 a year for repairs, servicing and MOT.

At the end of the year if there is any of the budget left ill put it towards the next years budget

Get a ppi and even if it needs imsb, aos, wp and some of the other commons you are probably talking around 3 or 4k (assuming it doesn't need brakes incl rotors). If it checks out and doesn't need much you are taking around a 7K risk for a great car. If there are major questions based on the ppi just walk away. You are in NC, that price is great for a boxster S in my area (Mass). can't find anything close to that for an S in price around here... Even bases are more than that, even with that mileage. Bought my 03S a year ago for 12K, 76K miles. Good shape but needed brakes (rotors and pads) and I had the AOS and IMSB done among some other things. So I have a good chunk of change in it now, but the asking price was 14K and I talked him down to 12K based on the brakes... I'd say post some pics which would help in the review of the car, and any other info you have been able to gather on it...

think of that purchase price as as down payment on a $12-14K car. :D


Clutch/IMS bearing/flywheel/Axle boots = $4K.

Suspension overhaul: $3K.

new Porsche worthy tires $800-$1200.

Perfectlap is 100% correct. That is a $6500 car in need of another $6500 of maintenance, repairs, and refresh within the first two years.

Thanks for all the feedback and recomendations. The seller took the car off the market after I started asking questions and wouldn't return my calls today. Obviously something fishy was going on. I do agree with Perfectlap, I'd rather pay $12k for a well maintained car, but one can always hope for that deal of the century. Keep me in mind if you come across any good cadidates. Thx.
