Sudden loss of power, advise required

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum so be gentle with me. I'm lazy, so I haven't tried a forum search, so if this subject has been covered before I apologise in advance.

The car is a 2001 3.2 Boxster S. The problem is as follows. I accelerated hard away from the lights in 1st gear but before even hitting the rev limiter the car suddenly lost power, slowed to a crawl and would not respond to the accelerator. At this point I had a rather irate Range Rover bearing down on me. I eventually managed to crawl off the road and turn off the engine. At this point I was convinced the engine was knackered, but I when I turned the key the engine started and ran as normal. No CEL, at least a half tank of fuel, warm engine.

Any suggestions as to what might have caused this? What is most likely, fuel filter, pump, accelerator pedal, throttle body or something else.

Thanks

Mike
