Rear speaker question

I have googled the topic to death but cant find my one question concerning installing a rear speaker kit into the storage compartment,
.
Does it eliminate the ability to open the center compartment? I store the owners manul there.

2000 S if it matters on the model. Looking at the kit at Suncoast porsce.

Thanks.

I'm not sure about the Suncoast kit but I have a 2001 S with factory rear speakers and there is plenty of room for the owner's manual folder in the cubby.

That's where I keep my manual....shouldn't be a problem for you :D

The rear speakers use the two cubbies on the left and right, the center section with the rolling doors is not affected by installing rear speakers.

Yup. I have the suncoast kit sitting on my work desk waiting to be installed along with some alpines for the dash. Can't wait to hear how it sounds once I finally get to it.

Thanks for the information. I have axset of infinity reference coming for the dash, so next will be the rear kit.

I need to change the amp,out prbably just goung to go for a 6 channels haes from a 996. I boght a fiur cannel donor amp to build an interface cable but after thinking it over i think 40 watts x6 channels is enough power.

Looking a some thin mount 6.5 inch kickers 2 ohms to put in the doors. That get down to 35 Hz or maybe just go with a infinity component kappa and not use the tweater.

Anyway i appriciate the info I am new owner still and have found a ton of info on this site.

You will find the rear speakers really help 'fill out' out the sound. I already had HiFi sound so I have not messed with the dash or door speakers, but I did add the rear speakers which are powered by a 6x40W amp from a 996 (versus 15W from the HU). Very happy with it, and it sounds good to my ears.

the speaker kit for the rear fits on the ends the center cavity remains storage but I added a pair of speakers in there also since I don't use that area. the sound is terrific, I know have 10 speakers. and an aftermarket exhaust

I added the speaker kit for the rear (used Infinity Ref)and a 6 channel 996 amp. I can hear it with the top down at 75mph. I think it turned out great.

I used the Kicker CVT65 units to replace the door subs. Mine were the 1ohm versions, so I tied them in series to give the amp a 2 ohm load and connected it to the 5th channel on my JVC amp. Looks and sounds great. Here is the thread I created to document the process:

For the rear speakers, are we limited to just 3.5"'s or can 4" speakers be placed in there?

mikesz 05-17-2016 03:03 AM

The factory rear speakers are 3.5 but I was able to squeeze 2 4x6 in the center also.

Do you happen to have the brand and model # of the 4x6's?

The center being the "rolodex" portion?

My '03 S came with the very base radio - just the in-dash radio/single CD player and speakers in the dash. No rear speakers, no door speakers, no amp, no Bose. I wanted a car with PSM, cruise control, heated seats and a black top - finding a car with those options eliminated all the local new inventory with fancier audio back in 2003. I added the rear speaker kit and it substantially improved the sound. So if you have an amp and in door speakers it will be even better.

I acquired my Boxster S with the rear speaker kit, but using the owners manual and the radio functions, the front or door speakers do not work, though there are speakers on the dash and door anyone have advice?

996 6x40 amps come in cabrio and coupe versions. Get the cabrio version.

Cunningr 05-17-2016 09:40 PM

I just bought one and it was a cabrio model. I am having trouble getting the amp out of the car though i cant seem to get a wrench properly on the top right bolt. I am going to try a cresent wrench this evening.

I am bout ready to pull the trigger for the reaer speaker kit. I put some blaupinkts in the dash which sound better but i dont like the so i have ordered some JBL GTO, initially had some infinity ref but i messed up mounting using the cia mount ring, glue messed up the neoprem i think just scarficing the oem speaker is a better solution for the dash mount.
