One less Boxster owner in OKC.

This morning I was attempting to get on Hwy 77 (Broadway Extension) to head downtown but the highway was shut down by police for four miles. Turns out that a Porsche Boxster took the wrong ramp and headed the wrong way into oncoming traffic. She attempted a U-turn in the middle of the highway of all things and was struck and killed by an SUV.
Sad tragic event. One report said the driver was from the small community of Jones, east of the city, so she may not have been familiar with the confusing layout of 77 and 122nd.
In the pics, it appears to be a 987 with Carrera wheels but it's hard to tell. I don't think it was anyone who was on here.

Very sad. In all likelihood she panicked and made a bad decision.

I cannot for the life of me understand how this happens unimpaired. If you arent drunk, even if you get on the wrong ramp and see traffic coming at you, why wouldnt you get on the shoulder or turn around? Some folks should not be driving I guess.

I question both drivers mental state.

I had similar thoughts. I can't wrap my head around the series of decisions that led to that. I would think my first impulse would be to pull over to the shoulder until it was safe to turn the car around.
Could have been so many things involved: impaired driving, cell phone (distracted driving), other diminished state of rational thought... Who knows.
Seeing that mangled mess did remind me that regardless of the safety features and technology, our cars are very tiny compared to the average vehicle on the road. Be careful out there!

How sad for everyone involved. And I agree, the driver was likely driving impaired.

I will admit to having made a mistake about 10 years ago when I turned head-on into a one way street in a city center/downtown area. Its hard to describe how it felt when I turned the corner and saw nothing but cars coming at me! Its one of those "OMG, what the hell did I do?" moments of terror.

Luckily, I was only going about 20mph and the cars coming straight at me were only going 25mph so I quickly pulled to the side of the road as they slammed on their brakes in horror of the crazy driver coming right at them. Then I sheepishly waited for traffic to go by so I could reverse direction. People had that "Yes, you are a stupid dick" look on their faces as they drove by me. Very embarrassing but no damage except to my ego.

Yes, that is a 987.2 Boxster.

So she entered the highway in what would have been the left lanes to her. Then rather than turn left onto the shoulder, must have decided to turn right, directly into fast moving traffic. Then was struck by such a fast moving SUV that the SUV fell on its side after the impact. Wow.

Maybe traffic didn't allow her to turn to the shoulder, but turning into more lanes of oncoming traffic doesn't seem like a good choice. Don't know what the circumstances were. And why wouldn't the SUV driver spot this going on and slow down? Once again, don't know what was happening to make it so bad. But it certainly had tragic results.

Doesn't take much speed at all to overturn a car with a high center of gravity.

Agreed....

I, nor any of us, are able to know what happened here......but I would say I've seen unbelievably carless driving by people more interested in their phones than paying attention to the road........no alcohol needed.

Retroman1969 04-24-2016 04:11 AM

I totally agree. Amazing the times every day I'm nearly run over by extremely careless people not paying attention or always in a huge rush.
In this location it's easier than normal to get on the wrong way ramp if you're not paying full attention, and there are no Wrong Way signs inexplicably. Very poor design.
