Do you ever use your parking lights?

Do you ever uses your directional parking lights? If so, what country do you live in?

I voted Yes...and live in the umm...USA. Hard to explain the circumstances, but pretty much when I feel that it might actually help in avoiding a collision. For example if I was in the first parking spot immediatedly to either side of a lot entrance.

I never bend the side mirrors in though, when street parking, as I've seen some people do.

I didn't even know what these were until I couldn't figure out why my Touareg was beeping at me like the lights were on when they weren't. Turns out the turn signal was engaged that the parking lights were on. Had to go to the Touareg forum to figure out why. Guess i'm just not cultured, but I never use them.

A Twaarg will beep at you if you're breathing wrong!

Those are the lights on either side of the car that come on when you turn the light switch to the left (counter-clockwise [or anti-clockwise]).

They are supposed to be used when parking in the street. You're supposed to turn on the side that's closest to the center of the street.

Perfectlap 05-22-2006 03:44 PM

every time I use these someone tells me I left my lights on and that I blew a headlight.

SD987 05-22-2006 04:46 PM

Perfectlap, good point. I've heard more than one announcement "Will the owner of a Blue Porsche Boxster...." perhaps you're right, more trouble than it's worth.

It's definately effective... in the course of less than 2 hours I had my car parked out on the street, two people STOPPED, came up to the house and informed me the lights were on.

When I used to travel to the Netherlands for business, I saw a lot of cars that parked with these lights on. But, in Holland, the streets are very-very narrow and parking is even more scarce! Lots of bicycles, too!

Oh, seriously? I guess I must have missed this in the owner's manual. It bugs me that if I leave the blinker on, the light stays on and the computer chimes to warn me.

So you're telling me people leave those lights on and leave the car on purpose? Seems like a battery drain to me... weird.

creseida 05-23-2006 06:46 PM

They use less battery than flashers, and in Germany, it is the law that you use them.

olly986 05-28-2006 01:16 PM

no because i would not park my car in any dangerous dodgy area
i creseida haven't heard from you in a while welcome back!

creseida 05-29-2006 06:54 PM

Thanks Olly,

I've been around, but spending more time out driving the fun Box and less time typing on the idiot box (computer). Taking advantage of a whole month of perfect topless weather. :)

lucky you here we are still freezing our arses
so much that i am off to the south of France next week to find some sunshine!

blinkwatt 05-31-2006 12:48 AM

I didnt even know that the knob goes counter-clockwise?!?!

RandallNeighbour 05-31-2006 06:18 AM

I use them whenever I am first or last on a street, near a corner or it's a dark street... and I always get "you left your lights on"

CoBeerToad 09-04-2012 01:09 AM

Does anyone who uses these know how long they can stay on before I need a jump? I'd like to find out the easy way.
