Good morning guys
Porsche Boxster 1999
My reservoir coolant tank is leaking in the trunk, I can see the water coming down the plastic bottle. is it recommended to put K & W Chemical FiberLock in it? I checked the cap and no water come from it, there is crack maybe.
I bought one aftermarket for 69$ on eBay apprentely it's the same.. Do u think it safe to replace it by the aftermarket one?
Thanks guys

Umm - no and no. I wouldn't 'pour' any fix into it. And once you see what a screaming bastard of a job it is, you'll send back your $69 aftermarket tank and buy an OEM one - because you'll never want to do this job twice. I did it with the transmission out, and it still sucked.

Hodan 04-13-2016 05:21 AM

Thanks but I see no different between the one I bought and the original I have

Mark_T 04-13-2016 06:14 AM

Then why ask the question if you have already made up your mind to use the cheap one?

You've been given good advice but if you prefer to learn this lesson the hard way then, by all means, proceed.

BTW, this topic has been discussed many times previously in this forum. Give the search function a try. It might save you some grief.

brewerbry 04-13-2016 06:21 AM

Do you enjoy being frustrated, injured, pissed, confused, and wasting your time? If you answered yes to ALL of those questions then install the cheap eBay tank (you will end up doing the job twice since that tank is garbage - ask me how I know). OR buck up and get the genuine Porsche part, do the repair once and be done.

The replacemenet process sucks, do it once and you can save quite a bit of cash because it it is time consuming. I do not wish having to do the job twice on anyone.

Starting to sense a theme here?

kk2002s 04-13-2016 06:53 AM

Guys, Guys be positive.
Look on the bright side:
It's easier to do this job the second time

Because it sucks the first time

Duezzer 04-13-2016 06:55 AM

I looked at doing my own - Decided NOPE - 4 hrs at the dealer - Done Deal.

If you do it on your own good on ya.

Hodan 04-13-2016 08:14 AM

I got your advice guys, I contacted a dealer.. The total will cost me 950$, they will install an OEM one costing 376+ taxes + labor+ water. So expensive for the coolant resevoir!

Retroman1969 04-13-2016 08:57 AM

I sympathize. I just had mine done and it was over $800. I about dropped, but that's what it costs, and I didn't want to pay for it again down the road. I think you're making the right decision.

Do you have a good indie in your area? He may save you some money over the dealer. But take the advice of the experienced guys on this site, and keep that cheap crap away from your car.

dghii 04-13-2016 04:48 PM

This job is no fun. I'm a cheap Az and did mine myself. $225 for the tank (about 5 years ago), 1 hour to remove old tank and three hours of fun putting the new one in.

Thank goodness I got a good tank. Not looking forward to having to do this again one day.

Hodan 04-14-2016 07:25 AM

I have no idea about how to do it.. It complicated about the bleding or put the air out after the job is done. and I think they have to pull the car up. Now I have to send back the aftermarket one. I should come here before I bought it.
Thanks guys

DrCactus 04-14-2016 07:33 AM

I bought a new part for $250 and had it installed for $250 approx. Canadian funds...

DrCactus 04-14-2016 07:34 AM

Hodan - I just noticed you live where I do.... send me a PM and I will give you the name and shop where I got mine done. He does great work for fair price.

Hodan 04-14-2016 04:48 PM

Coolant reservoir tank

I was on pelican website guys, I saw differents prices for the reservoir coolant tank: 408$ genuine Porsche, 352$ genuine Porsche, 229$ German... Can u guys tell me the difference? Witch one is better? Can all of them do the same job? Thanks

Hodan 04-14-2016 04:50 PM

DRCactus, I sent you 2 PM.. Can you tell me the website you bought yours for 250$ Canadian funds??

DrCactus 04-15-2016 02:43 AM

Yeah I am pretty sure I bought mine off Ebay for around $250 Canadian... Porsche wanted over $500 just for the part. I remember that I saved over 50% after buying and getting it installed from my shop. So you have to think the guy selling it and the car shop are both making some good profit already so Porsche is just nailing their customers really bad..... you think they care about their customers not when they can do this with a smile on their face.

DrCactus 04-15-2016 02:46 AM

$69 on ebay -- ummm seems super cheap compared to what I seen years ago. I mean you never know the quality of the $250 one either mind you... you just think its better quality the higher the price. The labour time to install is a lot several hours of work so its not something you want to break down after a couple months mind you. Save money now, end up paying twice the price later....

Hodan 04-15-2016 05:45 AM

Ok buddy, I just talk to him, we have an appointment on Tuesday to make a test on it. If you find the infos about the parts i will appreciate. Mine is a Boxster 99. Sure I'm gonna check at MarkMotors to fin the right number for the reservoir. Thanks again buddy.

Smallblock454 04-15-2016 06:33 AM

Please note that there are different coolant reservoirs available.
99610614703 - 97
99610614704 - 98
99610614706
99610614707

99610614707 seems to be the latest design, which i would prefer.

Hodan 04-15-2016 07:43 AM

Thank you Marcus, I did something in the car this morning, I pull up the valve like I follow some instructions in the forum. And I started the car the water start boil immediately and the water coming down the bottle before the car heated like before 100oc. Usually the water came when the car is really hot like 190oc. Is that a problem guys??
Can you tell me how to put all the water out from the tank? Because I think I have used a bad water Motomaster and I don't see 50/50 on it. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1460734964.jpg

redeye280z 04-15-2016 08:23 AM

DO NOT get the cheap after market one. I made the same mistake and ended up changing the tank 3 times because the first 2 were crap. They can't hold pressure and leaking.
The only think that came out of me buying that crappy tank is that now I can replace one in just over an hour.

Hodan 04-15-2016 08:37 AM

I will return the aftermarket one and buy the genuine one.

Mark_T 04-15-2016 12:16 PM

You didn't really put Motomaster coolant in your Porsche, did you? You have to use Porsche coolant, and you have to dilute it 50/50 with DISTILLED water before putting it in!

There's a pretty good chance you've made a real mess of things and will now have to get a complete coolant flush done in addition to changing the coolant tank. You should definitely not drive the car until you have determined whether or not you have created a coolant gelling problem.

Sorry, but you really don't seem to have the faintest clue as to what you are doing and should really get the car to a qualified mechanic to fix this problem for you before you do some serious damage.

Smallblock454 04-15-2016 12:34 PM

Coolant fluid: Porsche uses Glysantin G40 for 986 cars: G40® | Glysantin®

Here is the Glysatin G40 data sheet: http://www.glysantin.de/fileadmin/Files/Downloads/Technical_DS/technisches_datenblatt_g40_eng.pdf

Please note that there are some aftermarket manufacturers that make the same product. But i don't know availabilty in the US/Canada. So you have to do research yourself.

Couldn't find a detailed specification about the Motomaster coolant fluid: MotoMaster Long-life Premixed Antifreeze/Coolant | Canadian Tire but i'm pretty shure it's not compatible with the special G40. So i would recommend not to drive the car until you have the reservoir replaced. Also you have to flush the complete system now. Sorry for the bad news.

@ Mark_T: The fluid he used is premixed. Take a look at the label.

Regards, Markus

Hodan 04-15-2016 12:51 PM

I think it's really a bad news!!! I drove the car last year from May until November with the Motomaster fluid coolant. I didn't know if I shouldn't put it. but I'm not gonna drive it until I change the tank and flush the system like you said guys. It still running great then, It's my first Porshe.
Thank you guys

Hodan 04-15-2016 01:10 PM

Do u have an idea how much to flush the complete system?

I know, but the Porsche coolant isn't.

Smallblock454 04-15-2016 02:18 PM

I think it's 22.5 litres, but i can be wrong.

Just take a look in your owners manual. There you'll find the amount of coolant fluid you need. Also you find the recommended brand and type of coolant fluid for your car and model year.

Please also inform yourself about how to flush the system and refill it. A negative pressure system is highly recommended to do the refill, to prevent air bubbles in the coolant and engine system.

Regards, Markus

Mark_T 04-15-2016 02:49 PM

If you are going to do a coolant tank and a complete system flush, it would be a good idea to replace the water pump and thermostat at the same time, especially if they are original.

Also, you should get a new sensor and the upgraded cap for the coolant tank.

If you don't have the knowledge and tools to do all this work, your best bet is to let the dealer do the whole job. Probably around $1500 for everything.

Hodan 04-15-2016 08:14 PM

Thank you but I'm not sure I will flush the complete system because the car had the good original Porsche coolant fluid before I added some Motomaster when the tank started leaking! I think I put some of them a few times and the car still running great. I'm just gonna change the reservoir tank with et new cap and add the original fluid coolant in it. What do you think???
