dissecting and analyzing an oil filter
 

Any easy or typical way to do this? I don't suspect any issues, but wanted to know how to detect any normal or abnormal conditions. Do you just rip it apart and run a magnet through it? Thanks!

Running a magnet is probably the easiest way.... dry it out after and use a magnifier and check for any issues that way. I'll be doing this in a couple weeks time myself.

If it is the OEM style filter it is very easy. Use a razor knife to cut the ends off and unroll the filter paper. Anything other than oil should not be there. You may see some specks and if so run a magnet over them to see if ferrous or non ferrous.

A small amount of non magnetic material is normal, after all that is why there is a filter. Anything ferrous could be an issue so further analysis would be needed.

The spin on sealed unit filters are a bit more problematic but someone on here posted a link to a filter cutter so they are around.

Good luck with your filter check. Remember, change your oil every 3 - 5K miles.
