My Boxster is Horny!!

My Boxster is Horny!!

I noticed that her button was getting very sensitive.
If you barely touched it, she would honk.
It has gotten worse.
Sometimes under hard shifting she honks.
Now under hard breaking she honks, actually one long honk.
It is embarrassing stopping quickly at red lights and stop signs.
Sometimes when I make a quick turn into restaurants or gas stations she’ll honk,
and I’ll just smile and wave like I know the people looking at me.
On a hot day last week, she was honking really bad,
so I took some paper and wedged it under the steering wheel to make it stop.
It worked as a quick fix, and I was happy and no longer embarrassed.
So I went into work, I get a call, don’t you drive the black Porsche, well it’s making funny noises. I went out and it sounds like she is sick, more like moans non stop.
I take the wedge out and it stopped. (If you pull on your horn it also honks.)
Looks like I’ll stay embarrassed until I get a chance to fix her.

This was my first repair on my Boxster. Started doing it less than a week after I took possession of it.

I didn't know any better, so I took it to the dealership... The hornpad plate was something like $120 (my dealer DOUBLES the retail price on most parts under $500) and there was an hour of labor minimum to swap it out, even though it was only a fifteen minute procedure!

Now I know a lot more about our cars. Simply taking a torx screwdriver to the back of your wheel and removing the airbag will reveal the rubber grommets that should be replaced... with something like a piece of garden hose.

Or, you could order the part from Sunset for a fraction of what your local stealership would charge you for the part or the replacement service. $45 or there abouts.

This job is just a couple of screws and 15 minutes, plus disconnecting your battery for a few minutes before you do the work due to the fact that you are fiddling with your airbag.

If you've ever wanted to upgrade to a nicer 3-spoke, now's the time to consider it.

um... did you go to the link in 98Boxster98 post?

umm, yes, it's 3 posts above the one i posted. i've read this link about 6 times on both pages. it states how to fix but not how to remove steering wheel. i see 2 holes behind the steering wheel, and 4 phillips screws when you turn the wheel. does anyone know which of these screws i need to take off to reach the gasket?

i posted 2 pics of all the screws i saw, do i need to take out screws in pic 1 or screws in pic 2 to access the washers?

thanks

The screws in your second pic.

:o Ok I guess it's not entirely clear in that thread, but post #7 in that thread does mention:
The 4 spoke air bag comes off just like a 3 spoke. Disconnect the negative cable to the battery and you need a T30 torx driver for the 2 torx screws behind the wheel.
I now remember I did some additional searching on renntech looking for steering wheel removal before diving in, if I find it I'll post it. It's pretty straight forward, just a little nerve wracking working with the air bag.

My horn is fixed, it was a very easy fix once i bought the torx 30 tool. only took 30 minutes, I used the sealant method. this is a great site, saved me 200 bucks.

thanks fellas!
