Painting lug bolts
 

Anyone have a good way to paint them black so it does not just rub off as soon as you put them on?

I tried Kilz primer and Krylon gloss black paint and it just rubbed off as soon as I tightened then with a socket

I don't think there is a way to get the paint to survive the socket, especially if you use an impact gun. The expensive fix is stainless steel lug bolts. The cheap fix is plastic caps.

Powder coating is pretty tough, but I don't know if it is tough enough to withstand an impact wrench. Why don't you try it, and let us know how it works? :)

I was thinking that, but it would cost more than just buying black lug bolts LOL

The new Panorama has titanium bolts advertised for $275 per set. Is Fred making these again?

Have oddly had good results with plasti-dip. Wouldn't have expected it to hold up but maybe it's elasticity in the paint.

I painted mine with a very light coat of rustoleum spray can and they look good, if the paint is thin enough it will not crack, I only tighten my lugs by hand with a torque wrench and never with an impact gun

Who sells a soft socket for Boxster Lugs?

Buy the black plastic for 30 bucks and be done with it. They look nice. Don't have to worry about them.

Have the same issue. Tried painting, but that didn't last long at all. Was looking at the covers, but they won't cover the locking lug. (Went on Amazon and found bunches of different colors too. Thought that might be pretty neat.)

So I either need to buy 4 new lugs and 20 covers or come up with a solution to make the locking lug look pretty too.

Maybe I'll just get these.

For starters, throw away the locking lug bolts

Those have the wrong seat. Our wheels use a ball seat, not conical

+1. Although when I refinished mine I used Rustoleum Cold galvanizing paint as base, then topped with aluminum. You could use black. Mine look great and I use a standard socket on them.

If you get a cheap set of plastic caps from eBay you can make them fit the locking lugs by gently squeezing opposing sides with long nose pliers while immersed in boiling water. Then, still squeezing, hold under running cold water. It just makes them grip the round locking lugs enough so they don't fall off when you're driving around.

You can take a standard plastic bag from the store and place over the lug nut. Then slide a 6 point socket over the plastic it forms a barrier between the socket and the lug bolt. Works fine and costs nothing.

I know this will sound strange but I painted mine while on the wheels. I took a plastic soda bottle and cut the bottom off about 4 inches from the opening so it looked like a funnel. The opening fit perfectly over my stock lug nuts and I spray painted them. The wider funnel part of the soda bottle protected the wheel getting any over spray.

Try baking them in an oven when finished painting at 200F for 20 minutes. Then when you reinstall, wrap the head in paper towel or wax paper. If the paint rubs off, it's not been in the oven long enough. Impact gun will not work, must be hand tightened and torqued.
