brake disks on a lathe & gearbox oil level indication
Dear friends,
Long time to write here, hope to find you all well and your boxsters too! my boxster drives me crazy when I drive it :) I have done: change the diskpads I have replaced the old ones with Ferodo ( Please your feedback is appreciated on this brand) I have skimmed the brake disks on a lathe....pros and cons ( see picture) I have seen oil on that point ( see another picture) IS that from gearbox? Is there any indicator to see the gearbox oil level? Your feedback is very much appreciated!! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1458263338.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1458263355.jpg |
That sure looks like oil and not grease. With the car in the air, there's a fill plug you fill up to until it's going to pour back out.
Normally turning the rotors is not recommended and there is very little thickness loss until they are considered too thin. Like 2 mm. Don't turn them again. |
"fill up to until it's going to pour back out" is for the 6-speed gearbox. As he has solid rotors I think he likely has a base model with the 5-speed, which you fill to 11mm below the fill hole.
The usual recommendation is to use a bent paperclip to check the level, but I couldn't see the fresh oil on the paperclip, so I used an old feeler gauge bent at 90 deg with a line scribed at the point of correct level. Much easier to read. |
I have the 2004 facelift model, tiptronic, not the S, Where is that hole to fill up the oil? IS there any DIY? OK I would change the rotors next time to Cross drilled brake discs.
