Instrument cluster does not work
Hi,
I'm new to the forum. Just picked up a 2001 boxster base for a good deal and I started taking care of the issues it has. Yesterday I replaced the climate control unit in the center console because the screen had a crack in it and it was not readable. This morning I got in the car and noticed that the instrument cluster is not working at all. No speedo(analog and digital), no tach, no oil temp, no fuel, no odometer, and none of the warning lights below the guages light up. Does anyone know if by swapping out the climate control could have fried the instrument cluster. Or anyone have any advice on where to start looking. Possibly a wiring diagram? Thanks |
I'm working on the exact same issue. I do have some idiots lights working and the turn signal indicators but the cluster is essentially dead. The wiring diagram I have is not much use. It does not include the cluster itself but only up to the plugs that go into the back.
I have no idea about the climate control unit and cluster relationship. |
Does the warning lights below the guages come up at all on yours? I don't have anything other than the turn signals.

Did you disconnect the battery when you did the work?

One thing I forgot to mention was that the one I bought on ebay was a different color. Had a black casing and the one in my car is white. And mine seems like it is a Canadian version? The new one was not able to control the fans even though the display was indicating that it was on. So what I did was I canibalized the two parts and replaced the screen from the new unit and connected it to my existing unit. That seemed to have fixed the climate control and everything was working. I didn't pay attention to the guages at the time of installation. I only noticed that the instrument cluster was not working this morning |
It turned out to be the fuse B1. Problem solved

Oh very good for you!! I'm still fighting it....

guages don't work
Thanks for reply to my pm. I'm hoping by posting here I can get some additional input. Was the instrument cluster replacement a DIY job? I see you are "project addicted" so I assume you tackled it yourself. Was it a BIG PIA job or would you recommend a "specialist"? Is it pricey? (kinda dumb question huh?) Any specific advise? Thanks!

More thoughts: All the warning lights are dead but the air bag light flashes for just a second when the key is turned on or off. My digital readings still light up as do the lights around (inside) the instruments but the clock starts at 12:00 each time you turn on the key and then keeps running till you shut off the key. The digital odometer displays the correct mileage and trip mileage but of course the digital speedo reads 0. If you replace the instrument cluster how do you set the correct mileage?

are they still out ??
Check each connector on the back of your instrument cluster and make sure they are seated all the way. This same thing happened to me once and it turned one of my connectors was not seated and locked into place.

Wii do and thanks for the quick reply

Found it! Bad fuse (2 of them)

Non-functioning guages
Tack, speedo, fuel, etc along with the illumination are not working. Checked the related fuses B1,A10 etc and they're all good. Can you illustrate the amount of difficulty involved in checking the cluster's wire connections which was suggested?
