Something you don't see every day....
Sure, you expect to see stake bed trucks or old LTDs rotting out in a farm field but never a halfway decent looking 944.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...psnqozzgbg.jpg This was on a day I had to drive over 300 miles (round trip) to do a job. Well of course I deliberately took the back roads to get there and passed through a couple of ghost towns. Fortunately the temp was 70 all day so I could go top-down. http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...pscpd7hocm.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps9cmfqyjw.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...psbhqhho4p.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...psuwjfpkp8.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...pspigphwwp.jpg I ended up having to backtrack about 10 miles when I encountered a washed out bridge, but it gave me a chance to take a break in a small town and browse through an antique-junk shop there. I was surprised to find this 1/16 scale toy 986! http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...psjflqudu4.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...psfnzvxypk.jpg Also picked up this 300 page Porsche Art Book at a Goodwill for 6 bucks! I think these usually go for $70-80 don't they? http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...psa4mjtdf9.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...psan2tgeep.jpg As usual, the 160,000 mile Boxster hummed along happily on the trip. No issues. |
Something else you don't see is a prairie church quite like this one. It was supposedly designed by Bruce Goff in 1949 and built by its congregation out of discarded oil field equipment.
Recently restored through grants and donations. It was almost torn down. http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...pstrgzozyt.jpg In Bison, the last ghost town I passed through before it got dark. http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps3d37giaa.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...psj70ce54q.jpg These still make a classic profile don't they? :) |
Nice photos. Thanks for sharing. That Boxster model has got some beefy tires!
Jealous of your job in that hitting the road in a Boxster for a nice drive sounds alot more fun then sitting in an office all day. Lucky Retroman. |
steps
Notice the steps at the ice cream windows for the kids....heartwarming
|
Love following your adventures Retro...great pictures and interesting history there. Amazing what you can find off the beaten path.
 |
I always enjoy your travelogues, thanks again.
|
I have that Porsche book, too!!! It's huge.
Just looking at your pictures makes me wish for warmer weather again....back to freezing in NJ today. |
Nice pics!

Looks like a great day to drive! I always wanted to travel RT66. On my bucket list
|
Many thanks, everyone! I do indeed feel very grateful to be doing what I'm doing. I've done the cubicle dance and I don't miss the gray walls and clock-watching.
I think that's the furthest I've driven that car in one shot since the Eureka Springs trip last year. When many 17 year old higher mileage cars would be struggling, this one has been a trooper. :) It almost hit 80 degrees yesterday, but with wind gusts pushing 50mph I had to keep the top up. :( I'm wondering when we are going to have winter here. It hasn't really shown up yet. the weather can turn on a dime in Oklahoma so I'm fearing a March full of pent-up violent winter storms! |
Anytime I see that thstone post or you post I have to look. You have some of the coolest stories and photos and thstone and the best Boxster Spec race videos. I have threatened to do a cross country road trip for awhile. Looking at your photos it will be sooner than later.

i gotta say i am jealous.. that's a good way of daily driving your Boxster. i'm new-ish to this country and there is still so much i havent seen. when i see your photos and read the stories i feel like just jumping in the car and finding some roads and ghost towns.. dying to check out some ghost towns.
sucks that i am down in Miami and to get anywhere close to the interesting parts of this country it's a 8 hour drive. ugh!! i miss the old days when i was touring my old country Romania for work and finding some adventure along the way. now it's grey cubicle walls. what a kick in the groin! please keep sharing, some of us cubicle folks live through your stories :) |
Thank you so much guys! I really appreciate that! :)
It's more fun to share it for sure. I hope you can get out and explore soon, and I get to see some of your pics! |
I also really enjoy the photos and stories! Keep them coming!
|
Thank you thstone! :)
|
Me too, very cool. We don't have anything like that down here in north fl. Or maybe we do and I need to get exploring...?
|
Thanks Steve!
I bet you have stuff like that out there. ;) |
That first pic of the 944 is just plain sad:( As always, great pics:cheers:
|
Awesome pics and story! You have an artist's eye for photography.

I love towns frozen in time. I wish I could make the time to wander around like that. Well, I guess I could, but I just don't for some reason. Something I shall have to rectify in the future.
