So you either have a single row (worst bearing but replaceable) or a best bearing (and still replaceable in theory but at twice the cost). How would you feel if you bought the car, decided you really wanted to do the IMS, got the transmission off and discovered it was the one that took a $$$ case split to do?

Depends on the price of the car, your ability to pay $3-6k more, and your risk tolerance.
