Decision Time
Have identified a potential buy (2002 MY). Had a PPI performed. Found "microscopic" metal particles on oil filter media during dissection. No chunks or dark metal flecks. No plastic pieces. According to shop the particles were found by shining a flashlight and seeing the reflection. Other than that the car is in good shape. The oil changes have been fairly regular (5,000 mi or so) best I can tell. They recommend an ims bearing replacement asap, obviously. Should I run from this buy or is this something that may have been caught early enough? Car has 65k. Did not pull the oil pan for further inspection. Thanks for your opinions.

I say no. But what did the ppi technician think? As Jake Raby would tell you, a car with any amount of metal in the filter is not a candidate for an ims retrofit without a complete teardown.

Run away!!!
Seriously, though, I would suggest you find a 2003 or 2004 model.
Glass window top, better fit and finish, redesigned front and rear ends, much nicer looking. |
Either look for another car or expect quite the discount.

If the mechanic saw the metal without a microscope, the particles are not microscopic. Metal in the oil filter = run away while you still have money. :chicken:

I agree with the others. There are a lot of Boxsters out there and there is no reason to settle on one that may have issues. You obviously know what your doing getting a PPI.
I agree with 10/10th that the glove box and glass rear window of the 2003 and 2004 Boxsters nice to have. The earlier models can be retrofitted with the 2003/04 tops or aftermarket glass tops are available. The glove box can't be retrofitted.... I looked into it. I don't agree with 10/10th opnion on the looks and fit and finish. Looks are subjective. I prefer the simpler lines of the earlier years. And, I have never heard that fit and finish got better over the years. That said, If I was in the market for another Boxster I would look for a 2004 550 anniversary edition. http://press.porsche.com/archive/products/press_kits/press_kits_2004/PDF/new/1-6_Spyder_Release.pdf Take your time and enjoy the hunt. The right one is out there. |

Run away.
Visible metal particles in the engine oil is not normal or typical. I'd find another car or expect a huge discount on the price. |
