upgrade stereo unit
hi guys, just looking at upgrading my stereo unit in my 986 boxster s
looking to get a double din unit , if anyone has suggestions would be great also wondering if replacing the speakers in the dash is an easy feat cheers |
I did a Parrott Asteroid head unit. Love it but it takes about a minute to boot up (android). Lots of options that it can do, video and such. I seem to find something new once a week. It has three USB ports, one I put an input on the dash and one I installed a 128 USB stick with music on it. I can do voice commands to what I want to play.

I was interested in that as well, just didn't like that there is no volume knob
|
You can change the volume by sliding up or down on the screen or the volume button slider. Very easy and I think it looks more "finished" then the ones with a "big old button"....

Put this in my 02 a few months ago. Android based, Nav, OBD II, DVD player, backup cam etc. Love it. http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9rxaevol.jpg http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/...psr725z607.jpg |

I have the basic system and I added the rear speakers so I have dash and rear speakers. No amp installed or needed, or really wanted. I do however want bluetooth and USB, so the Continental radio could be a really good solution for features and look |
In a 2004 it won't really matter. In my 02 it has a factory amp. It would be a pain to wire it up. Plus, i only spent a little more and got a lot more radio.

Can it just be swapped with the stock HU if we have a MOST system with an amp in the frunk? Or this needs a harness? |

Much cheaper to just replace the amp |
MOST amp
Is that the amp up front ??
I think that is MOSFET :) |
If cost is a consideration, an Android tablet is a great alternative. My Nexus 7 does all the things the head units do, including extra storage via USB, and obd II. You can get them for less than $100 online. Added the Kenwood Bluetooth unit for $100, and a wiring harness from Amazon for $15, and was able to use the factory amp, and all 6 speakers. with no issues.

MOST is an optical bus and IIRC is an orange jacketed fibre optic cable MOSFET is a type of semiconductor (transistor) |
