Can dead battery be charged from fuse box at 2 amps. ?
 

Have 02 Boxster base with dead battery and broken hood latch with no emergency release cable present. Is it possible to fully charge battery at 2 amps. from fuse box without damage to electrical system ? Thank you.

No. The dead battery cannot be recharged this way, the current requirements are way too high.

This is a common problem. Just use "Search".Lots of posts.

How much power does the Boxster use while turned-off, parked, and the doors closed?

Maybe with all the fuses pulled-out, and some patience, the battery could be charged over a few days (if the battery is in good shape). If it's a completely dead battery, and beyond half it's life, chances are poor.

But to get the hood open I used a phillips screwdriver with tape on the side and connected the ground lead to the door latch and it gave enough power to open the hood and then it was a simple task to connect the charger directly to the battery

Yeah but his hood latch is broke. He has been trying to get it open for a few days.

40-60 mA. The problem is that a dead battery pulls a lot of current (read amps) to come up; the under dash wiring is not designed to handle that kind of load.

Instead of charging the battery via the fuse box, why not charge through the cigarette lighter?

If the battery is in good condition and the plates have not sulfated it could be done. As said if the battery is in good condition and the internal resistance is not bad you could trickle feed it 1 amp but it might take 100 + hours to charge given losses to internal resistance and condition of the battery.

I posted in a thread about a year ago how to unlatch the hood by applying power to the wire that goes to the actuator for the release. Apply 12v to pin 33 on the blue connector on the immobilizer box connection under the driver's seat (I used ground to the door frame latch).

Note that the OP got it to work by using the fuse box connection while the doors were locked.

Have you been able to get the engine cover off or could you?? If you can get to the alternator, you could charge thru the large cable. Or the inspection cover behind the seats too.

I have a battery saver type device that trickle charges very low current.

If it will switch into charge mode when connected to the fuse box, then it's going to bring the battery back up. If it acts like it's not connected, then the battery is too flat and needs something with more grunt to get it back up to the stage where the trickle charger will start charging it.

To get yourself to that stage, I'd go for the connection on the alternator - assuming that you can get to it?

The the cig lighter is your best option and should be able to handle a slow charge. At least enough to get the frunk open.
