What's your favorite gear?

These aren't first gear cars.

Second starts to propel you. Finally the power meets the weight. Great cornering, power all the way through turns!

Third (my vote) really sends you up to 100 quickly. I spend a lot of time in town in 3rd.

Fourth is my freeway cruising gear. Easy passing here.

Fifth is the OD of the group. Saves gas but can still pass or get up quick enough.

Sixth is still over 3k on the tach above 60mph. I never see this gear.

3rd all the way, buddy!

thstone 09-20-2015 04:35 PM

3rd!!! The rush into triple digit speed can't be beat.

Hawaiian Driver 09-20-2015 05:22 PM

3rd gear as well, my car spends more time in third than any other..

Joe B 09-20-2015 05:54 PM

I don't have a "favorite." Whichever one is appropriate for the speed .

BIGJake111 09-20-2015 07:06 PM

My first to second shift is sloppy so I have to go easy on it.

Second to third is much better and boy does it feel good.

It's great as third doesn't run tooooo high in speed and is great for a freeway entrance. Depending on how the ramp is set up you can get the left lane quick enough that the intake is by the left wall when under the bridge. That sounds better than anything on earth!

I really love 6th on the highway though. It feels good to leave the car in 6th (we have a 65 limit around here) so traveling from 75 to 90 on passes feels excellent in 6th.

Downshifting into 2nd or 3rd with the resulting RPM at about 3-4k then taking it to the redline. So much fun.

911monty 09-20-2015 08:07 PM

3rd gear, nicely cambered turns, 4500 rpm. Heaven's choir.

kk2002s 09-21-2015 04:05 AM

I'm with the rest of the sheep 3rd
It's a good fit for a lot of non-hwy driving
BUT- 2nd coming around a highway on-ramp is the most fun, noise and acceleration
Shift from 2nd to 3rd at 6000+ rpms entering a highway, you better keep an eye out for johnny law.
By the time I come to my senses in 3rd, I just row quickly through 4th, 5th, 6th so my speed, rpms and heart rate can all settled down

I do find that if I try and man handle and steer the shifter from 2nd to third, I screw up the shift, getting caught in nowhere land.
If I just push the shifter and let all the springs do the guiding, then it's a smooth transition

CoBeerToad 09-21-2015 05:33 AM

I had to vote for second. Most of my acceleration is done in this gear as I don't have many opportunities to get over 60 mph anymore.

DrCactus 09-21-2015 06:03 AM

I voted for 3rd gear which seems to be the popular vote... I find the power I get from 3rd to the RED LINE keeps my blood flowing pretty fast.... also keeps the rookies behind in my dust!! I also find the sound like music to my ears...

VIVA RED LINE!!

3rd for fun
6th for cruising on the fwy

I've started doing 3rd gear for the freeway cruising at 4K rpm and 55-60 mph.

2nd gear for local roads where the speed limit is below 40 mph, also 4K-5K RPM.

Now that the car is in 100k mile territory I'm going to make an effort to get the lead out (with more frequent oil changes and FilterMag).
Below 3K RPM cruising is out. Too much low end making up the bulk of my miles I think leads to problems.

Where's 7th?

I sense prejudice :(

:D

Finnegan 09-21-2015 01:05 PM

I chose 2nd, for those roads that have hard turn arrow signs, saying things like 20, or 25 on them. (those signs are off, by about half)

Keith Newby 09-21-2015 01:39 PM

Underwear and socks....always!

That's always the boxster speed. You can generally double the yellow caution speed.

+1, with that said I don't like 1st.

landrovered 09-21-2015 05:25 PM

3rd from 3000 to redline is pure sex!

Retroman1969 09-21-2015 07:54 PM

Whichever one keeps me in the torque peak at the moment. ;)
