Cantilever tires for street?

I have always loved the big tire look on a Cobra or other '60s sports car. This picture of Grants old boxster gives me wood.

He was using phone dials and cantilever slicks as a cheap autocross setup. I would love to do this. Only problem is I don't think I could replicate the look with normal street legal tires. I'm sure there would be a significant performance loss going from 17" to 15" on street tires also. Is there such a thing as cantilever street tires that would give back some of the performance to wide tire on narrow wheel?

for starters, you can run 15" on a Boxster, it wont fit. 16" is the smallest. On a S model, 17" is the smallest

Quoted from Grant somewhere,
"The current modifications include carbon fiber deck lids, lightweight flywheel, stripped interior, 15x7 Porsche 944 wheels with cantilever race slicks, KW Coilovers, Porsche GT3 control arms and swaybar, Recaro Profil race seat, momosteering wheel, hawk racing brake pads, headers, and race exhaust system, Guard LSD with 60/40 setup"
So I guess 15" will fit with non s brakes.
16" phone dials are out there too, just more expensive and leaving less sidewall.

I stand corrected. Good to know
Didn't think they would fit even on the base brakes

With enough mm worth of spacers, my spoke 13" wheels from the MG would fit.

16x7 wheels with 235 square tires would probably do it. Get PSS9s and the car lowered enough so the tires just fit under the wheel wells.

In the 16" I could go 8" wide and 245 or 255. Looks like I should start looking for some 16" late offset phone dials
