Anyone with later model VW Golf GTI ownership experience?
 

Considering a later model VW Golf GTI as a daily driver. Have never owned one but did drive one a few years ago and was very impressed.Anyone?

What years are you talking about? I have an Audi A3 as a daily... Basically the same car with pretty rings.

I had an '07 GTI that I bought new and put 95k on. Is that too old for your search? Also, my mom had a '10 Golf TDI for a few years.

I bought a 2011 GTI new (and a 83, 89 16v and 98 VR6). Solid car that gets good gas mileage and is fun to drive and almost infinitely tunable. The MK6 and MK7 have direct injected motors so they do have issues with the intake valves getting carbon build up.

Thinking the 2010 version.Drove that particular car when brand new and was a hoot.

That's the TFSI engine, lots of fixes over the 2006-2008 FSI engine plus a timing chain, not belt. I'd look for a 2009 or newer, the TFSI is just less to take care of. I have the FSI in my Audi, I've replaced most of the engine to get it to 202,000 miles. Still a great little car though.

I've had the 2010 TDI and a 2012 GTI. Those were my last two cars before I was given my company truck. I loved both cars but the GTI is the one I really miss. I've had a lot of cars over the years and the GTI is at the top. The P car is pretty new to me so I can't let it have the top spot just yet! I actually miss the GTI everyday. My wife is even thinking of making it her next car as she loved the GTI just as much as I did.

I only had one issue with the GTI in 61,000 miles (60k with a stage I Revo ECU tune). The high pressure fuel pump died at 40,000 miles. At first I thought the ECU tune had something to do with the failure but reading on the forums some stock cars had their HPFP fail as well. Aside from the HPFP failure I used it as my personal/work car averaging about 3,000 miles a month with zero issues. The clutch was starting to slip in third gear or higher under boost but that is understandable with the tune. I was impressed the clutch lasted that long. The only thing I'm seeing on the GTI forums is the need to de-carbon the heads/valves on these 2010-14 DFI engines after higher miles. Any experience?

Pretty common issue with DI motors. Think catch can and walnut shells.

If your going to tune the car and you have a manual transmission figure on the need for a clutch as the stock one can't handle more then stock power. The DSG transmission can handle a lot more then stock.

You're welcome. I was aware of the issue but I don't have any experience cleaning out the carbon.

I have a 2012 DSG GTI, and it's a laugh riot! I particularly love the DSG, especially in sport mode. I have to admit I was as fast at our local autocross in VW as my '02 Boxster S, leaving it in sport mode with launch control. Paddle shifting just got both of us all confused...

I will say it has been through THREE water pumps, all under warranty (I'm at 56K now). VW has been through 2-3 design or vendor updates. I won't own it out of warranty, though.

Ok, finally pulled the trigger last Monday morning.

2015 GTI 4 door with DSG and 20,000 miles.Wanted to try the DSG to minimize the potential for turbo lag and wanted the 4 doors to load my road bike and camping gear.

Starting with 2015, the Mark VII,s have increased the torque from 207 to 258 and the car is lighter!

Still in warranty and a whole lot of fun.Will start being prepared to do the head/valve cleaning in the future due to direct injection.Will be looking for time frame and average cost for this in the future.Anyone know about this?

Good for you for you. The Mk7 is a big improvement. They are also pretty easy to get up tho 300 hp with some basic tuning. Did you get one with the performance package that add better brakes and the limited slip dif?

Was not lucky enough to have that.Heard that the option is a good one.
