Oil Level Measuring Question

Hi everyone:

The oil level gauge on the dash of my 01S counts down for 4 seconds when cold before displaying the oil level. If the engine has been running, the count down lasts between 5 and 50 or so minutes.

This week things changed. No matter whether the engine is hot or cold or whether it has been running or not before turning on the ignition, the count down is 4 seconds before a level displays.

Anyone have an idea as to what might not be working. My guess is a sensor went bad, but I really have not clue as to the cause.

Thanks
