Turn Signal Work Intermittently

Hi everyone:

Every once and a while for the past several months, the turn signals and flasher stop working. It's not clear why. Sometimes, I'll start the car and they won't work. Other times, they'll be working one minute and not the next. Trial and error have shown that the signals will start working again if I do one of three things:
  1. Push the flasher switch
  2. Jiggle the turn signal stalk
  3. Turn the ignition switch off and back on

These three strategies don't always work, however. Sometimes the turn signals just start working by going over a bump in the road.

So here's my question. I've replaced the flasher switch already. I thinking the problem might be in the stalk. Could it be the ignition switch? Before spending the time and money to fix one or the other, I'm looking for your advice.

Thanls

My blinkers quit working. It was the hazard switch. The blinkers run through that switch. Intermittent if a tougher problem.

My left blinker started working intermittently and then not at all. Bumps in the road would get it going. No problem with my flashers. I carefully took the steering wheel off and found that the wiring harness from the blinker stalk was loose.

Hi everyone:

Just reporting back on how the problem got fixed. It looks like the relay, located under the front left dash, needed replacing. I put one in a week ago and the turn signals and flasher work normally now.

The key insight here was several actions could get the signals working again. Since it was unlikely all three components were failing at the same time, the idea was to look for something in common. Looks like the relay was it.

Sounded to me like a classic case of low blinker fluid.

(somebody had to say it - many were thinking it)
