which vehicle for a long trip?
I just revamped our stable and thinned the herd to the 04 boxster S and a macan turbo, hopefully good choices for most situations. Now my problem is that we have a 6 to 7 thousand mile trip coming up next month and I can't decide which vehicle to take. We are headed to Hermann,mo for a couple of days of winery tours, then on to Yellowstone for a week before heading to south Dakota for a week at Porsche escape and then on down to hill country in texas for a week then over to Louisana for the angola prison rodeo and home. A lot of miles in a short time, elevation and north to south location variables. The Macan is pretty much the perfect traveling vehicle with a nice ride, super comfortable 18 way adjustable seats, lots of room and with the handling options, a lot of fun to drive. The boxster on the other hand is not too uncomfortable with the sport seats and we are accustomed to packing light and the biggie is that it is a convertible. We just can't anticipate how much top down weather we will have in those locations in sept and oct.
I guess there are worse problems to have than which Porsche to drive on a trip. On another note, just did a track day at Atlanta motorsports park in the macan turbo and it exceeded all my expectations. And that is a super track very technical and lots of fun. |
I would say Macan

Please let me have this dilemma some day...please please PLEASE 8-)
Have an awesome trip - sounds amazing. |
The Macan sounds like the right one for that kind of a trip at that time of year, although no doubt the Boxster would be more fun. I`m always buying things and dragging them home with me, and the Boxster would but a crimp in those activities :D
|
The Boxster sounds like it would be fun but for that much driving I would pick the Macan. More room and if it breaks down, you won't be paying the bill.

Macan....Room and zoom...

I've done several road trips in our Boxster over the past several years. Each trip was either to Porsche Escape, Parade or other Porsche related activities. Salt lake city, flagstaff, Taos, NM and all totaled about 3000 miles round trip.
For the driver the Boxster is the way to go. For the passenger the Macan turbo. Performance and comfort packed all in one. Pretty good gas mileage too. We're on a road trip to Pacific Northwest now Calif to Wash driving the coastline. The Macan turbo is averaging 24-26 mpg with 3 passengers and luggage and a baby. |
I would suggest the macan. You're likely to spend a fair amount of time on the highway, and I'm sure the Macan would attract less cops and be a bit more fun for highway pulls. Not to mention the space and comfort. Which if you find your way into some twsities the Macan won't disappoint!

I would think the bears in Yellowstone would prefer the easy accessibility the "rag-top" allows!
|
Macan. Easy cruising. :)
|
I came across the same dilemma ;)
|
I could create a Venn diagram to help you but.....
1) If the roads you will take are mostly straight highways, then the Macan. If there are twisties, the Boxster. 2) If you plan to buy lots of things during the trip, then the Macan. 3) If the wife will drive and loves driving, and 1 = twisties, then the Bosxter. 4) if the weather may be unsettling, then the Macan. I hope this helps. |
The one with the warranty.

Use a vehicle shipper and swap somewhere in the middle.
Boxster: Quote:
Ship the Boxster back home and drive the Macan: Quote:

Buy an aluminum trailer and take both.

Funny I was thinking the same thing, put the Bosxter on the trailer and have both.
|
This is too easy:
You drive the Boxster The wife drives the Macan |
Macan hands down. It's a very fun car that also hauls stuff and offers long distance cruise comfort.
|
I drove my Boxster S with sport seats home from California (Car is currently in Ottawa Canada) and i'm not sure my back has ever been the same LOL.
Macan for sure! |

Looks like the macan has it. My head has told me that all along, but every time I get in the Boxster and let the top down????????? We will be doing 400 to 500 miles several of the days between destinations, so I suppose my 72 year old back would appreciate the 18 way adjustable seats and there is the warrantee. We are also traveling with another couple who have a boxster and a Volvo station wagon and they have been also trying to decide. We may take the macan, they can take the boxster and switch off from time to time.

I'd love to hear how the Macan does in this long trip. See just how accurate all the initial quality studies that Porsche comes out on top of are.

We have a Durango Citadel 2014 with a hemi. My wife loves driving the car. The hemi pulls strong and is quite fast. . On long trips it rides super. All wheel drive and every creature comfort possible . My wife's old All Road went kaput on a rain storm, water got inside the car and ruined all the electrics. Car was totaled and Audi shirked all responsibilities and I was really upset at their attitude. Their contribution was 500 off on a Q-7 that cost over 65,000. I bought the Durango for 50,000 which is much nicer and offered more interior space. Good riddance Audi.

Home again... 23 days, 22 states and almost 8,000 miles in the macan and it was certainly the correct choice. There were some top down days that would have been nice to have had the boxster, but there were also several 700 plus mile days that would have been torture in it. Those 18 way seats are awesome.
Quite a lot of the interstates were 75 and 80 MPH so I was able to run 85 and 90. Averaged 22.8 MPG and performed perfectly. Ever so stable on all kinds of roads, wet or dry. Everything they say good about the Macan is true. |
You only live once. Drive thought the mountains with the top down every chance you get.

I've driven my turbo and Boxster on several long trips and basically they suck. Usually when we travel now we get in my GMC truck because it's super comfortable, we can see traffic better and it has a much better NAV/Sat system than our German cars. I'd take the Macan.

Rent an SUV and let someone else's car suffer the mileage.

As a lot of people already said, Macan. Great car. When I was in Barbados I used this car. Interesting fact. Barbados have +1 as a country code but has no area codes https://areaphonecodes.com/barbados/ which I find a bit confusing. After all, there are some countries with +1 too. Anyways. Macan was great for traveling.
