Rough noise on start, a bit white smoke

Hello folks,

Some days, let’s say 10% of time, on startup I hear a loud screeching noise, just like Starter noise I suppose.

And then sometimes it’s is also followed by a bit of white smoke. It happened today and I took photo of exhaust, attached.

AOS was changed at dealer 2 years ago.
No oil leaks under the car.
A bit coolant leak from front left radiator.
I was running the engine with a bit overfilled oil for couple months until I removed some of it thelast weeks.

Going to need bigger pictures.

That noise isn't uncommon. Sounds like the timing chain tensioners, or closely related. I pulled and inspected my starter... and unfortunately that wasn't the problem. I'm trying to build up confidence to go the whole 'TDC... pull the green plug... remove the three tensioners... replace... etc". Do a search of the forum, and you'll find plenty of info.

The white smoke? Maybe from the overfill. Likely just residual oil due to the flat6 design. I get it 1 out of every 20 starts.

If you've a Durametric... you can check the cam variances (so I've read). I'm far from the resident expert.

Good luck.

Posting those HUGE pictures is not helpful and is rude. Jeez! Delete those big useless pictures!

The screeching noise could be that the bendix drive needs some lube. THere's a video on Youtube that covers it.

The smoke is probably unrelated and is probably air oil separator AOS. goes away when you replace the old one with a new one.
