3.4-295-250-07
I called the local dealer to discuss ordering a specced '07 987S and they confirmed what has been debated on Rennteam and that other board.
For '07 the Boxster S is to get the 3.4 from the Cayman with a price increase. No other details were available (or were voluntarily divulged) as the '07 order guide is yet to be published. |

A welcome improvement though.. Let's hope we see a corresponding power increase for the base. I'm gussing the base Cayman will get more power, and then the base Box will catch up in '08.

price increase, expect it to be a nice increase.
Sportec put the 3.8 in the 987 (Excellence Magazine) and they felt it could have easily accomodated even more power. Funny how BMW don't think twice about dropping big power in their roadsters yet getting Porsche to do it is like waiting for Cubs to win the world series. |
if the base cayman got more power wouldn't it be called a 911???
|
Seems I recall engine transplants being discussed on this very forum a while back, with some negative/conservative views on the difficulty of dropping other P engines in a Boxster, and why it was better to avoid thinking along those lines. Guess it wasn't really all that hard, was it? Even the factory can do it...
What will the 2007 base engine be? The 3.2 detuned a little to separate the models? |
"What will the 2007 base engine be? The 3.2 detuned a little to separate the models?"
I didn't make inquiries there so I can only speculate but it wouldn't surprise me to see Porsche ditch the 2.7 altogether in '07. I guess they could variocam-plus it but I just don't think there's that much naturally aspirated power still lurking in that powerplant, and I don't think they'd want to launch a new variant (Cayman base) with the 2.7...that would create zero buzz. I'd think something along the lines of a 250hp 3.0 that would match up adequately with BMWs Z4 coupe and Z4 3.0si (the new 255hp upgrade to the non-M Z4). Audi's new TTs are getting the same engines as the old ones and Mercedes make stupid-horsepower but keep getting paired with automatic trannys. |
The dealer told me the same thing, but I don't think they can say it's official until well, it's official.
I still don't understand what they're going to do about the Cayman once they make this change. Certainly they can't bump up the HP after just one model year...can they? |
I think they'll leave power alone in the Cayman for now. Maybe the base will wind up with the old 3.2?

one vote for all Porsche models above the Boxster getting an extra .2's

I think they're bringing the Boxster S with the 3.4 in line with the Cayman S price, which quashes the marketing approach of making the Cayman S between the 911 and Boxster. As a poster on the newswire board noted, the structure is then simplified to:
987 / C7 987S / C7S 911 / Cab 911 S / Cab I don' think Cayman owners get pissed, as the 987 S buyers are paying up for the 3.4, just like they did. If any one gets bent, I'd imagine it would be the 05-06 987 buyers, particularly the S owners. |
Does that price increase really bring the 987S in line with the Cayman S? I just checked and while I didn't know the Cayman S was as cheap as it is, are they really going to bring the price of the 987S up by $4200? Seems rather stiff and would make the Cayman S pricing even more weird in that "Why isn't it cheaper than the convertible" sort of way.
If they do bring the 987S up to Cayman S specs and prices, that doesn't bother me at all. Again, the difference in horsepower is not THAT humongous and with the price difference I don't think it'd affect 05/06 residuals that much. Porsche did this with the 986 a couple times too, don't know how people felt back then. Who knows though, maybe I'll trade up to an '07 next year. :D |
I think the Boxster price is already too high given the options you need to buy to equip it properly.
Porsche tests us again! |

ALL PORSCHES ARE OVER PRICED.
They wouldn't be the most profitable car company in the world if they weren't. How long can this over pricing continue? That's what I'd like to know. |
