Mobil 1 to Castrol Magnatec
I've heard some really good things about Castrol's Magnatec.
It's half the price and I plan and doing an oil change every 10K km instead or every 20K km. Anyone had any experiences from diverging from the factory oils? |
Depends on how long you intend to keep the car for. Couple of years no problem. But I feel sorry for the next owner. Check the viscosity rating for the oil. Mobil 1 and a few other are very special oils. Price isn't always a guide to quality but in this case it is. Not sure that 10K change intervals will help.

Based on Castrol's data, it appears that this is a rather normal dino based oil. M1 of course, is a legit, Group 4 PAO synthetic oil.
I don't believe Castrol's oil is on the Porsche approved list; M1 is factory fill. Castrol's Viscosity Index is 149; M1s is 187. Your call! |
PS- You do NOT need to change your oil every 10KM. Using M1, you can easily go 15KM. and the factory rec is 15K MILES.

I was
changing my oil every 5k, so you're saying I don't have to? There are no benefits to changing your oil early?
|
Hi,
The best Change Interval is between 7500 and 10k mi. - at least once annually. Oil works a little better in it's mid-life and chronic early changing can actually accelerate wear. I'm not a big Fan of the Short-term vs Long-term Ownership arguments because I don't believe anyone should intentionally abuse or neglect machinery and then pass it on to some unsuspecting Sod down the line. You never know if this type of neglect will rear up to bite you before you have the chance to unload it. Proper, Timely, Maintenance is part of the deal. Using the Change Interval described above strikes a good balance between economy and good Custodianship. Hope this helps... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |

Agreed! |
Okay, thanks guys.
I'll start to delay my oil changes, 7500-10k, or every year. Whichever comes first. Quote:

Wow i thought the cleaner the oil the better it is for the car
Thanks a lot for the tips, I just want my car to be in the best condition. So then I may just change it at the time you specified. |
Sorry to change to topic on this thread, but I have just the opposite question. THe previous owner used castrol and now that it is time for an oil change I would like to use Mobil 1 0w40. Will this switch be hard on the car? Thanks
|
No, go right ahead.
