K&N filter
 

If i place my excising standard air filter element with a K&N filter element, will this effect my MAS sensor in any way, if not will the K&N filter better my performance on my Porsche Boxster 986.

Any experience would be grateful appreciated.

If your sensible and blow out the excess oil before installing and are able to clean it regularly you should be OK. I ran two different style with out any issues for 20+K. In the end I'm back using a stock filter because replacing them is easier than cleaning the K&N every couple thousand miles.

Threads read about a 50/50 split of those how contribute a problem to running one and those how have had reasonable luck running one. The other thing you'll find is allot of negative comments from people who have never used one??

K&N filters have to be cleaned every 2000 miles? :confused:
I thought cleaning them at every oil change is good enough, am I wrong?

How much dust and dirt do you drive through? More dust = clean more often.

I used K&N in offroad motorsport for 20 years and liked them in that application. I just don't see much upside with these cars yet there are a lot of downsides. I prefer a stock filter for 986/987 cars.

You don't have to cut it out ("excise") :eek:.

K&N filters flow more air, so they don't filter as well as stock air filters, unless you oil them up too much, which then allows oil to be sucked into the engine. Stock filters are cheap. I'd stick with them.

There was a test of BMW K motorcycles measuring airflow past filter. Compared were

Stock filter
Stock filter 1/2 blocked off
No filter
K&N

There was no measured significant difference in airflow.

Waste of money, and if you need one that's rectangular as opposed to circular, a poor quality product.

You're better off fitting a 987 filter box and filter. That's what the SE came with. Took me a couple filter swaps before some parts guy said its a 987 filter.

Yes, I have been looking into it but this seems too complicated for me :(

How valid a test is this if it finds no difference in flow between a half blocked stock filter and no filter at all?

Obviously airflow is blocked but the engine will only take in what it can unless blown. Test shows the car is "over-filtered", or it takes a severely blocked filter to actually take performance away. And more air flow doesn't always mean squat.

I replaced mine this past Spring and never had an issue. Car sounds smoother if anything as the old paper one was clogged up really bad... no issues with MAS sensor.

Car came with one. I thought that was a good indication the PO thought about his/her car to think about doing something other than just drive it.
I used it no problems for 1-1/2 years. I had put one in my mustang and drove it 80k miles with no issues
Before a 2500+ mile road trip last year, I thought I didn't want the added variable of an over oiled Filter potentially clogging my MAF so I put in paper.
I'm getting ready for another 2000 mile road trip and I'm going to put in another new paper

Only issue with paper filter, I can't find any in-stock in auto parts stores around me so it's another basic maintenance item I have to order on-line

How are the fab speed ones?
