what's the best road you've ever driven on?
or what is your personal favorite?
mine has to be Transfăgărășan (say it with me :) ) in the Southern Carpathians in my dear old country Romania. Thank you communism for coming up with crazy ideas and not thinking twice about doing them! wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transf%C4%83g%C4%83r%C4%83%C8%99an some more spaghetti photos: https://www.google.com/search?q=transfagarasan&es_sm=122&biw=1920&bih=995 &source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=ZpORVfunEMvjsAXAx6mY BA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ only opened a few months a year because during winter its covered in meters of snow, you're lucky if you get to experience it. took a Golf GTI there once (better to bring a turbo'ed car to the game due to the extra thin air). only me and a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG on it that lucky evening. quite the experience as at the wrong time traffic will ruin it! this road replicates a lot of famous race track turns and the best part is you have complete visibility in every turn! an interesting fact: In September 2009 the cast and crew of the British television show Top Gear were seen filming along the road.[4] The segment appeared in the first episode of Series 14 which first aired November 15, 2009. They were in the country on a grand tour with an Aston Martin DBS V12 Volante, a Ferrari California T and a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder. Host Jeremy Clarkson went on to declare the Transfăgărășan as "the best road in the world" – a title that the presenters previously gave to the Stelvio Pass in Italy. pretty proud day to be Romanian :D |

There are two, Fort Ross Rd. to Cazadero hwy in either direction from Hwy 116 to Hwy 1. The other is Dry Creek Rd. to Stewarts Point/Skaggs Springs Rd. either way from Hwy 101 to Hwy. 1. Both are in Sonoma County California and are miles of twisty, switchback roads that go through miles of woodlands, climb hills and come out on NorCal coast at the Pacific Ocean.

Hwy 1 PCH south of Monterey to Big Sur CA coast! For top down scenic switchbacks I don't think it gets any better. Every time I'm there I want to turn around & do it again repeatedly, but my wife is crying already. :D

Pinnacle mountain road in "tuxedo" North Carolina!

Got to be Route 50 between Landscheid and Bitburg. Lots of switchbacks and elevation changes.

There are a lot of very nice roads here in Utah, hard to choose! |
Southwood Road southwest of Gravenhurst, ON, and other Muskoka side roads...
It has almost 21 miles of twisties, it is a second or third gear road all the way. It's quite a rush and a must drive for anyone in SW Ontario. |
Two roads come to mind:
1 Haleakala Hwy on the island of Maui from sea level to 10,000 feet, twisty all the way. 2 Hwy 1 California (pacific coast highway) from Morro Bay to Pebble Beach, Both hard to beat and very lightly patrolled. |

I was in LA in the summer of 1988 and drove the PCH from Malibu to Dana Point. The high point of a very memorable trip. |

Keeping it a secret!

There are roads in the Caliifornia Sierras that are spectacular, but they are just finished much quicker than that cruise down or back up the PCH. |
The A13 / A22 between Innsbruck and Merano for the curves tunnels and views, the A9 South of Leipzig when the speed is unrestricted and the trucks get out of the way! Maxed out my C Class rental car on that road!

Cris, I did the Transfăgărășan last year as part of a 6000+ km tour. Other memorable moments from that trip include the little roads through vineyards north of lake Balaton in Hungary, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria (not too far from Gmünd, birthplace of the Type 1), Silvretta High Alpine Road also in Austria, and a drive through Black Forrest in Germany.
Just this weekend, I was on some other beautiful roads in Norway - see a separate post coming up in a few minutes. |

Damn that sounds so good!! :D Jealous like crazy here! I promised myself first trip I take back to Europe I'm doing a proper drive through the mountains! Have some newly acquired relatives in Austria so definitely going there. Glad you enjoyed Transfăgărășan.. sorry about the poor quality of the rest of the roads in Romania :) |

Pretty much all of Vancouver island, cascade loop is amazing too

Probably the Old Military Road in Scotland. Sadly I was driving a rental diesel Audi A3, but I did get all four wheels off the ground.
In terms of tracks, the Nurburgring which I drove in a Renaultsport R26.R Megane. Amazing car. |
French Alps roads normally over crowded. For clearer well sighted and challenging roads head to Spain and some of the Pyrenees. Staying closer to home the mountains and valleys roads in Wales are also excellent.

Creston BC Canada to the Belfor Fairy

A bit off the original request but on topic for the question of great roads to drive: I have never found a Porsche (or any other automobile) website devoted to great drives. The two best I have found are for motorcycles, but I find they are great for Boxsters, too.
MotorcycleRoads.US - Great Motorcycle Roads in the US 2413 Motorcycling Roads United States Anybody know of similar sites established for Boxsters, Porsches or autos in general? DBear |
