Has Driven DT40 been reformulated?

Just changed my oil with JGDT40 and it came in a new container. I had to wait for over a month to get the oil because Driven was out of stock. Does the new container mean a new formulation? http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1431251990.jpg

Yes it is a new recipe.

Jake Raby 05-11-2015 05:43 AM

Yes, its the next generation in the newer bottle.
We never stop making things better. You should notice quieter tensioners at start up and a couple more MPG, too.

We've been using this formulation here for just over a year.

OK.... which one is this? first generation or second?

I changed the oil January 1, 2015, after buying the oil from Summit Racing. This was my second oil change using DT40. Never had any issues with it.

Can this oil be used for autocross and track? There seemed to be some disagreement at some point.

Autocross, should be fine, those are short runs, and lower speeds.

Track- DE or racing? You don't say which. DE, should be fine with proper change interval. Charles runs this oil in his Engine swapped Cayman (3.8?). Racing, no, they have dedicated race engine motor oils. This is not a race oil.

I got mine from Summit as well because of the free shipping and my bottles were just like that. I can't remember when I ordered it but I think it was sometime early 2015. Summit now shows the new picture of the new bottle on their site.

You can get it from Jegs a little cheaper and free shipping.

Jake, would it be good to mix 1st gen & 2nd gen until your 1st gen is gone?

Sounds good - I'll keep an eye on my mileage. Any other hints on changes in the formulation?

I have no idea what race engines use but I presume its dumped after each event.
The disagreement I recall was about using DT40 for autocross and DE. I think it came up on discussion of a deep sump kit.

Jake Raby 05-11-2015 09:23 AM

The different generations of DT40 are all compatible, so crossing them in the engine is fine.

That said, DT40 was NEVER developed for track usage, be it AX, DE or etc. We have developed XP5, XP7 and XP9 for those roles. These XP oils should always be used on the track, under all circumstances.

There's been a total of 5 different generations of DT40, the bottle doesn't always change with a reformulation.

There you go, PL.

Thanks, Jake.

FYI anytime you see a product packaging change you should assume the product has changed because 99% of the time the product has indeed changed.

Jake that is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard, I've been involved with racing engines for years including Indy car. If what you say is true then the dt40 oil is total crap and should not be used in a lawn mower. You are now in the Snake oil salesman category in my book. You obviously are selling based on the fact that an idiot is born every minute, and are obviously a lot of idiots who own Porsche vehicles. A fool and his money are soon parted.

How many oil developments have you been part of? I'll not argue with you; I simply stated that DT40 was never developed for the track, and that our focus with race oils like the XP series has been focused on track activities.

DT40 has a long lasting anti- wear package and its dispersants are also long term, better suited for everyday driving. The XP series of oils are opposite of this, and they are short lived with the ability to withstand extreme heat for track service.

Generally when DT40 has changed in the past the entire formula was not changed, it was simply a new type of moly that was used, or etc.

As far as selling anything, like Snake Oil, well I challenge you to try and buy something from me.. I have nothing to sell except a complete turn key engine, there's no eBay store, no online store and I have no way to handle the sale of anything except a complete engine. I am a developer, not a sales person.

That said, back in 2008-2009, before DT40 was sold I used to sell the same oil as my private label, and I indeed was a Snake Oil salesman. It worked, I'd sell 3-5,000 gallons per year. That wasn't enough to have the oil made, so unfortunately it had to get sold to the public, and was branded DT40, with my name on the first three generations of bottles.

Of course, a lot of this is humorous. That really is my great, great grandfather. I believe he was just as mean as I am by looking at him!

Has Driven DT40 been reformulated?

I just received my latest Blackstone report and the comments suggest that the latest oil sample was not DT40. The latest sample has moly where the last one didn't, and there is a little more boron too, with less calcium and zinc.

I have reached out to Blackstone to confirm their findings but I wonder if the formula for DT40 changed recently?

Has anyone else noticed any changes?
