Has anyone disassembled this part (bottom part of center console/dash)?

Please see attached picture of the center dash/console just below the audio system. This has the CD trays and a tray for misc items. Has anyone disassembled this? I need to take it apart and cant figure how.

In my conversion project I am thinking of putting the Andromeda display here as this place is not used much and is perfect place if I can fit the display. I need 1/2" more with at the bottom and want to figure out how to get that space...:)
Thanks.

I'm parting my boxster, so recently removed this. If I recall correctly, you need to pull off the sides and that exposes a couple screws and then it just comes right out.

Literally pull the gray parts outwards(sideways)? Do they kind of snap-in/out? I thought so too but did not want to break them...:)

Thanks Jake.

Yes pull out from the back. They will snap right out.

Thanks all, I was able to take the bottom console apart. I think I will be able to figure out how to fit the display I want to fit there.

On a side note, When I was taking it apart, I had an idea to move both stock units of the CDR-23 down ot the lower slots. I was able to figure out how to fit them but there was no easy way to route the cables down as they are not long enough. So I decided to leave that and took the bottom console apart and will figure some way to fit the Andromeda display there...

Ok, I'll ask it.... Are you building an electric 986? Aren't the Andromeda's used in EVIC Systems?

PorscheFan5 05-11-2015 07:36 AM

Correct, I am converting my 2004 Boxster to EV...:)

PorscheFan5 05-14-2015 08:56 AM

After some reading on the CDR 23 (vs. CDR 220 in the older Boxsters), I understand that the CDR 23 is a different unit using the MOST bus and cannot just be swapped out with a CDR 220. In fact it cannot be swapped out easily with a aftermarket unit since it uses the MOST bus and one has to end up upgrading, the head unit, Amp, speakers...the whole lot. Which may not make sense for most people. So in an effort to see how I can add either the 3.5 mm jack input or Bluetooth input to the CDR 23 I have found very few options. One of them is sending the unit to Becker who would hard-wire a 3.5 mm jack to the circuitry. Also the interesting part is that I have learnt that 'this' upgrade from Becker is a 'mono' upgrade'. Will be calling Becker again to confirm.

Question: So in trying to understand the above and coming up with options I have a question:

Does anyone know what the unit above the radio does? See attached pic. The unit below is the CDR 23. What is the unit above that and its function? It has two connectors to it at the back that are used and 2-3 that are unused...

Please help! Thanks.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1431622444.jpg

That photo was too perfect...I had to used it for my question, thank you

PorscheFan5 05-14-2015 09:54 AM

Ah!

Thanks Bran. Why did I not think of it...:) Guess I was too deep into the radio thought process...:)

And, perhaps you can guess that I have never driven the car....since I bought it with a busted engine for my conversion project. Otherwise I would have known what that was...:-)

amagalla 05-15-2015 11:54 AM

Hey Mahendra, You're gonna want to keep the climate control, but you can move it to the bottom opening on the lower console. That way you can take the stereo out and give you enough room for your double DIN panel.

PorscheFan5 05-15-2015 05:32 PM

Amagalla,

I tried but the cables are not long enough to be routed to the bottom...

Have you done this? How did you manage to reach the cables? I can manage everything else...

Thanks.

PorscheFan5 06-10-2015 12:55 PM

Sorry for the delayed update.

I gave up on re-locating the CDR-23 and climate control to the bottom and modified the bottom console to fit the Andromeda display. Worked out pretty good after some modifications. Success!

Separate question:

Attached is a picture of my Boxster's front end after removal of the front bumper. The picture shows a black part hanging by a wire. Looks to me like a temperature sensor to me. When I removed the front bumper, this was there dangling. Not sure where it goes on the front right side. Perhaps somewhere on the right radiator...but cannot see where.

Anyone have an idea what this part is and where it goes/fits? Thanks.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1433969911.jpg

tommy583 06-10-2015 01:10 PM

It goes in the bumper cover vent on the passenger side. There should be a hole for the wire and the sensor mounts to one of the louvers.

PorscheFan5 06-11-2015 09:06 AM

Thanks Tommy. I figured it would be something like that as I could not see any other place on the front of the car. So this sensor is picking up temprature of the air coming in from the Louvers...it seems. Outside temperature sensor?

Thanks. Now I know where it goes.

DrCactus 06-11-2015 10:20 AM

Its interesting as I have that same senor on my car but my display does not show outside temperature or anything... so can that senor be for something else??

you will need to activate the OBC (on board computer) in order to see the temp display in your cluster.

can be done by using the durametric software, or at your local Porsche dealership.
