The wires run up to near the door handle release cable, where they enter the door. The airbag stays in the door when the panel is removed (minus the cover on the door panel), so no big worry there. I would unhook the battery anytime you are messing around with wiring.

The wires eventually run to the doors main connector. I would imagine that there is power there somewhere. I'll check the wiring diagram tonight.

Not a whole lot to add...

Your wires will be brown with yellow stripe and red with black stripe. If they are not in the door at all, they should still be on the car side of the doors harness connector. You should be able to find them in the bundle that enters the car right above the fuse box. You would then have to run wires from the door side harness connector (assuming that they aren't there). Not an easy job.

I couldn't find a pinout for the door connector, so you'd have to probe to find the correct pins.

You can see the wires on the left side of this picture.

How do you replace the bulb for the door courtesy light? Do you have to remove the door panel and get it from behind, or do pop the light fixture away from the front?

The fixture just pops out of the door card.
