Painting the Rotor Hats?
While puting new shoes on the Boxster today, I am convinced on painting the rotors red, with new white decals. The stock rotors are looking pretty shaby, so, I will probably paint the hats with high temp paint, leaving the surface that mates with the wheel bare.
So what do you think? Black? Red? Silver? Post pics if you have painted your rotor hats! |
I don't have a pic but I painted one of mine when I was painting my calipers. I thought I was using my hi temp silver but I grabbed my son's silvery blue (like a polar silver with a little more blue). It still looks great, the best out of them, but I didn't ever get around to the other three. This was last October, still looks good, I will snap a pic tomorrow. Some folks say not to worry about masking because the brake pads will scrape I off but I did anyway.
I worried about having a thick paint surface where the wheel mounts to the rotor so I used thin coats and the wheel wore those spots down, hopefully with heat and not friction / movement. I do have the wheels on and off a fair amount though so that may be it. |
I painted mine hi temp black...sure kept them from rusting
|
I bought a set of front rotors and painted the hats high temp black. Before installing them I decided to pick up new rear rotors as well. Shopping for the rear, I found a full set that comes already painted (black) including the cooling fin ends.

painted my hats silver with VHT paint & masked the rotor faces before hand. I would suggest masking the braking faces to prevent the pads getting gummed up with junk.

+1 vht high temp silver
2 years no signs of rust Masked face as well Really just makes it look clean & neat in an otherwise very dirty area |
High temp black on mine.

Red For Me
I painted them red on my Guards Red Boxster and put new white decals on them that I found on Ebay. They look great after two years.

VHT silver here with blue tape masking the friction surfaces. Now if I can just get them installed in the car...

With a four day Porsche Club run coming up next Friday morning I decided to paint all mine free hand today with VHT Silver, replaced the rotors/discs & pads last year but the stock Matt Gray finish appears to attracted dirt very easily & was difficult to wash off, hopefully the Satin like silver finish will stand up better, it certainly blends the top hats in better with the wheels.

I painted mine with HiTemp (barbecue) black paint - it looks more like a dark grey or charcoal color - looks nice and clean!

I think silver is a good choice so it is not so obtrusive in color. Actually, I'm planning to paint mine with this color.
