Yes,No,maybe ?
I came across a 03 boxster s being sold by a local dealer.
90,800 miles new brakes rotors 90,000 major service Not done as far as I can see. Service records indicate A clicking sound around no 3 plug when warm. Local dealer could not find the cause of the ticking. Price $15,900.00 IMS bearing done along with Spin on oil filter. Midnight blue tan interior Chrome package, on board computer. My trade would be 03 base only one key. Clunk Right rear control arm. 63,000.00. Just passed Pennsylvania state inspection. 5,000 miles per Year. Brakes and tires good for another year. No upgrades done. No onboard computer. Dealer wants my car plus $4,400.00 cash Yes, no, maybe ? Thanks, Bill |
Is your car paid for?
Take a fraction of the $4,400 and make your car perfect/better. So, no to the "S". |
Yes car is paid for. 60,000 mile service also done.
|
Make sure you get them to toss in a few years full warrenty - that alone can be worth any over pricing they are doing to you.
|
I asked about a warrenty but they are selling it "as is"
No warrenty available. |
Take the $4,400 and buy Apple stock. In about 6 years pay cash for a gently used 981 Boxster.

$15.9 is almost full retail on an 03S. Their price to me seems way too high for a car with a potentially expensive engine repair.
I would maybe trade even up for your car, but would consider they should throw in some cash before pulling the trigger on this deal. |
The question is Why? Why do you want to trade year for year? Is the thought of the bigger motor that intriguing? Does your car need some major work that you are trying to avoid? Do the bells and whistles on the S make that much of a difference?
To me, you first would want to sell your car privately. For this sort of car, you will get way more for it. And then I would be looking at moving up into something newer - like an 05 or higher, or else what is the point? Why trade what you have for almost the same thing, except with more power? |
$4400 + 27k miles - price differential between Base and S - That seems high
$15900 - I would like that for my 02S with 76K miles (No IMSB upgrade) They are giving you $11500 for your car. For a dealer that's not bad How bad do you want an 'S' punk? I love my 'S' I think with some research you could negotiate, especially if there are engine questions. This 03 S needs a good PPI to understand what that tick is about. That's your determinator So I say 'Maybe' if PPI is good and less cash Remember - you are giving up 27k miles. That's 2-3 years of solid driving |
For me the clicking would be a deal breaker, and also giving up the mileage. Who knows what that clicking could be. I can't think of any "good" clicking.

I was just thinking the s has more equipment on it.
Boise sound system, rain sensing wipers, better brakes, And more power. Really there is no reason to trade my current Car in no problems other than the clink inthe Rear control arm. Passed state inspection without any problem. Bill |
Spoke to the dealer again. No movement on price.
I leaning on keeping mine especially with The clicking and mileage difference. Bill |
They lost me at 'they couldn't figure out what it was'

In all seriousness, pass. It seems like they think their turd is a diamond. |
I know it's tempting but more mileage means more repairs. Better to wait for lower miles ;) before starting a new relationship.
|
I am keeping mine.
Milage difference, ticking, Not sure if 90,000 service was Done. Plus no car payments. No movement at all on maybe A little better deal from the dealer. A sincere THANK YOU for all of The responses. They helped out a Lot. Billhttp://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1426705860.jpg |

Clicking or ticking sound could be as simple as a loose spark plug.
|
Owner had a porsche dealer pull the plugs they were ok.
Dealer suggested that the next step was to pull the head. Owner declined. |
I have had the same thought as i recently paid of my 01 base. I'm just worried about getting another one and not knowing exactly what lies ahead. When I bought my car I kind of rolled the dice initially as I purchased it without any service records. But now 3 1/2 years in I know all regular maintenance has been done and how it has performed since its been in my hands etc. Sure it has its eccentricities (the alarm sometimes goes off unprovoked for example) but who knows what another one might need. Also with the money saved not having a payment its easier to justify upgrades with my wife. Seems the decision has already been made but I vote stick with what you got.
