Walter Röhrl speaks on turbos.
Well the carrera is getting a 2.7 turbo and the S is getting 3.0 turbo. The mid engine models get 4 cylinder turbos and Röhrl says quote
"At least it's not a four-cylinder turbo like in the next Boxster. That sounds like a Volkswagen Beetle, I'm not kidding you! I tell the guys, 'You're joking with this sound, right?' But they just say they are working on it. I'm sure they will get it right." That's unnerving. He also states that he bought a boxster spyder as there will be no more cars like that. Maybe they can give the new Boxster a pee shooter exhaust! :p
Even though it's easy to get big power increases with aftermarket mods I will be less interested in a turbo 4 Boxster especially if it sounds like crap. |
I think for long term ownership, or buying a 4+ year old car, going with a naturally aspirated motor is the best choice. Less crap to replace when it goes out, and it's gonna go out around 100k miles, even if it's lubricated and maintained properly.
I'm eyeing a 2012 991 S as my next Porsche. Hopefully, I can get a loaded version of the car in 2017 for $60k or so. |

Smaller displacement and forced induction are definitely the future of performance models. Look at the base motor in the BMW's and the GTI and R spec motors for Volkswagen. Subaru WRX has had them for quite some time as has Audi. Even several of the true exotics are going this way. It's all about weight, CAFE requirements and cost. It is the new reality. Right now is the absolute golden age of performance cars in my opinion. It is headed down strictly because of government regulations. Go out and buy the best car you can now and hang onto it!
All that being said, if you live at High Altitude like I do forced induction is practically a necessity. Going up in the hills here to 10,000 feet and above cars get very anemic without it. |

My vote is to just give the boxster the 911 engines without the turbos, it would be no more emissions then the 911s to my understanding. Maybe the power would go down, but heck it's worth it.
I have always felt that I would be more open to turbos if it was just a loss of displacement with the turbos. When you get a loss of cylinders it's the nail in the coffin. |
And with these statements, the market price of a Cayman GT-4 just went up $30K...

Walter speaks the truth! Maybe the only guy on the planet able to make statements like this without getting into trouble with his "employer".
Sadly a sign of the times, hell, even Ferrari goes turbo..... I think I keep my NA Box for a loooong time. Turbos are great no doubt but a NA engines are just so much more direct. |
