Scrapping an engine. Anything worth saving?
I am about to scrap a 2.7 engine that had a broken #2 rod, piston, and cylinder. The whole engine was full of debris. I am planning to keep the intake, harness, various sensors, sump pan, and accessory bolts. (That is probably too much already) Is there anything else worth saving? Is there anything anybody needs?

My first thought was to save the Cam chain tensioners. But if the engine was full of debris, they might be toasted.

I finished pulling the engine apart today. It was already bad when I bought the car as salvage, so I don't know the circumstances of it's demise. I did discover a bolt, that looks like a rod bolt, floating around the case that was not missing from any of the rods. It appears to have left a few good impressions:

As for parts, I hear that the IMS can make a good lamp. Anyone want it? http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01/ims1421884488.jpg |

78,
I'll take your M6x35 screws used to hold the lifter carriers in the heads. I really only need 1 screw, but I'll take them all just so you're not stuck with a random pile of junk. |
Save the oil filter housing. I don't need it, but I've had a few people ask me for one.

What about the Variocam mechanism? Do those ever need to be replaced/worth holding on to?

I don't need anything of have anything to add. I just wanted to say wow! That thing must've made a hell of a noise when it went!
You ever figure out where the bolt had come from? |

Bob, as noted in the pm, here are pics of the oil pump. Obvious scoring around where the gears rotate, but to me it all looks functional. I will give it a quick run in the parts washer at my office if you want it - I just noticed the dog hair on the gears in the pic :o : http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1421963295.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1421963328.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1421963350.jpg |
In conclusion...
Unless you have an intact core there isn't much of value to a grenaded M96. Bolts and accessories can be useful for future maintenance. It was well worth my time to take it apart for the education. I have a much better understanding of the design and function of these engines now. As for the scrap, I dropped off two stripped 4cyl Integra blocks, an Accord V6 engine, and the stripped out 2.7 M96. My total was about $160 of which probably 1/3 was from the M96. The case halves make pretty easy "clean aluminum", but most of it was best left as mixed. Not much of a business venture, but I got some real estate back in my garage. |
