Replacing coolant sensor
 

I have a 2002 Boxster that recently gave me a fault code indicating that the coolant sensor needs to be replaced. I bought one from Pelican Parts some weeks ago, but my question about it: How difficult is this job, and how easy is the access to this sensor?

I'm trying to decide if this is a DIY, or if I should take it to a mechanic for this.

I imagine it's the same on a 987, which I have done on my LE. If so, it's a relatively easy job, just a bit frustrating removing the snap-on clip that holds it in place.

Access is easy by removing the panel behind the seats. The sensor is on the driver's side. I ended up pulling the sensor out of the antifreeze jacket and stuffed a wrag in it so antifreeze wouldn't run out. I then removed the clip holding the sensor to the snap on wire. Removing the clip was the most time-consuming step of the process. Wanted to be careful not to break it, so I worked gingerly.

I checked Bentley and I couldn't find a write up about it. If you've got an afternoon, you can do it.

I actually had some worries about removing a sensor for coolant. I wondered if something like that would make a problem with engine fluids upon removal. I shall keep a shop rag handy for the coolant that will leak when I remove the old sensor. And thanks also for telling me where the damned thing is. The Pellican Parts note about is tells it is on the "Pulley Side" but that wasn't enough detail for me. Cheers, friend.
