Boxster with S-Car-Go built 3.8L

Interesting ad over on the PCA site. Curious to know if they get anything close to the asking price. At that money you can get into a nice 997S.

You can almost get a moderately used 997 turbo.

Timco 01-16-2015 02:57 AM

Just because that's what he has into it, including the purchase price........

Redboxs 01-16-2015 03:19 AM

Wow! I'd like to see how much this actually sells for.

Not so, I know who this is and he bought the car new for $68K.

Giller 01-16-2015 06:20 AM

Man o' man, that's a lot of cake! I recognize they've put a new motor and lots of other goodies in there, but that still seems a huge stretch to me.

If you mod a car, it should be done for your own enjoyment, you will never get what you value the mod to be on resale.

OKCShooter 01-16-2015 07:42 AM

It's only $20K too high.

I would take $28,K for mine, & it's not green!

Gelbster 01-16-2015 11:13 AM

The ad does not describe the credentials of the engine builder. That would be the most important factor.
Second, how many hard miles on the car since the rebuild?
By comparison, Bill's car(BYprodriver) was built by an expert and has had a very long proving period. Just a pity it isn't green.

Personally, I'd put more $$ dollar confidence in a quality rebuild (assuming the engine builder's reputation is A+) going into a Cayman/Boxster than a bone stock 996/997 for same money.
I'd also have questions about the state of the engine before the rebuild.
3K miles post surgery is barely out of the woods territory.

The problem here is that you really have to be in love with the 986 to go along with a $35-38K engine upgrade, assuming the donor car (with apparent supsension and exhaust mods) is worth ~$10K sans engine.
And you REALLY have to be in love with a green/space gray car for $48K...

Yeah, I know quality engines can get expensive, but you are right - $35k+ for a new engine seems excessive...better have north of 400 ponies.

also, I didn't see anything about CA smog. He has plates on it. I don't know how he is getting away with that...

ChrisZang 01-17-2015 09:16 AM

If I recall it right (and my memory might be faulty) the engine went to Jake Raby for a 3.2 -> 3.8 rebuild after the engine threw a rod

why wouldn't he pass CA smog? it's a bona fide 3.8 engine with the cat converters

Hummm...you must be new to CA :-)

You can't just go throw any old engine in a car out here! Yes, there are certain years you have some flexibility (OBD 1 cars, 1996 and older as well as 1974 and older cars), but certainly not in a 2000 boxster.

There may be an appeal process he went through or something, but a 3.8 has a different or tuned ECU that will throw a code on a smog machine most likely...

What is the cost of that from Jake? Certainly under $35k, no?

Not yet but CA is working on that. Any M96 engine looks similir enough to the original that it will go undetected unless you take it to a dealer for smog check. $$$

Chris if this is Mac's car, which I believe it is, then S-Car-Go did the work.

Yes it's Mac's car, so I stand corrected

Wrong. I've never seen that car, or engine. It also uses Pauter rods, I don't use Pauter rods. I also don't work with S Car Go..

Displacement alone means nothing. It's all in the combination.
