IMS replaced on Tipronic
After a lot of thinking, I decided to have my IMS replaced by an independent porsche repair shop here in Maryland. Roger is the owner and the only mechanic on his Autotheraphy Shop. He did an excellent job replacing my IMS. My car is a 2002 base Boxster, Tiptronic (automatic) transmission with 79k miles. It cost me $2,600 to replaced the IMS bearing, RMS rubber seal and others.
My existing IMS bearing is a single row bearing and still in good condition when it was taken out from the engine. It was replaced with the LN IMS PRO kit with dual bearing. I can now relax and not thinking about it. Attached pictures are the before and after. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1419266646.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1419266660.jpg |
I got my 04 tiptronic done at TuneRS in coral springs, fla and it was $2675 for new IMS, RMS, AOS and DOF. Feels like a lot of money considering that it performed the same coming out as it did going in, but it does give you peace of mind. Mine had 77K on it and the bearing was still tight, but both seals were starting to leak.

Similar work done recently (Nov.)
Just had my '02 2.7 TIP set up with the new L&N dual row ceramic bearing, RMS, AOS and spin on oil filter. I feel the same as you in that I can rest a little easier now. Bearing was fine and not leaking and Oil filter has been clear of all debris for the last three years that I have been cutting it open and inspecting it after annual oil change. Also nothing clinging to magnetic drain plug and nothing in sump pan. Sounds like we are both good to go.
