Auto Dim Review Mirror

I love my Boxster, with one exception.......That crappy manual review mirror. When I adjust it at night by flipping the toggle on the bottom of the mirror, it reduces the glare, but creates a shadow effect of the lights that I find annoying.

Has anyone reto fit an electro-chromatic mirror in their Boxster? Does Porsche even have that as an option?? I'm sure I will not be able to find a mirror woth the Boxster shape (so you don't see the head rest/roll bar) in the mirror.

I have noticed there is a very fine wire in the center of the windshield (antenna???) that runs a direct path of the OEM mirror base. Any problems with negative effects of a auto dim mirror on the radio? Just a thought.

Porsche does offer an auto dimming mirror...at least they did in 2004...assume they still do. I think there was a thread here about retro fitting one. The fine wire in the windscreen is the antenna...and I think it does double duty as the RF pick-up for the door locks. If memory serves the auto dim mirror wires run across the windscreen header and down the passenger side of the windscreen...I also had the impression that the wiring of this feature was not to terribly complex. But alas I'm an old guy and could be completely wrong on this.

I don't have auto-dim on the Box, but do have one on the Merc, and it bugs the crap out of me when I'm IDing the cars behind me at night [particularly with the Merc's burlap windscreen (don't ask)].

I generally keep an eye on what's behind me at traffic lights for example, so I don't go burning rubber in front of Jonny Law.

YMMV

(the SLK's panty-hose windstop drives me insane with all the headlight glare)

Check out www.renntech.org for retrofitting the dimming mirror and/or rain sensor. The fine wire in the windshield is for car radio.
