I could never get rid of my Porsche now
 

I've spent all my money and all summer getting my car road ready. During this period, a couple of times, this thought creeped in my head. "Just sell the car. You had your fun. You really can't afford a car like this anyway, but you can cross it off your bucket list that you owned and drove one."

But lately, another thought has popped into my head. I don't want to ever be driving some POS down the road and see a Boxster and think to myself, "I used to have a car like that. What a fun car that was." It's that thought that will keep me in this car or perhaps a newer one forever.

Both are very valid points. You really wont know unless you sell it.
Do you miss driving the car after a disruption in habit? I recently drove my Xterra to Pennsylvania for a vacation. I was away two weeks. While I was away I did not really miss driving the Boxster. However, I got home and one of first things I did was hop in the Boxster to go for a drive. Thats after a 3400 mile drive in the Xterra.

After being without a Boxster for 2 months and now have a used Lexus RX 350 I still find myself driving on Sunday mornings around the Porsche lot(no salesmen on a Sunday).

Having a Lexus suv with an extended warranty I don't even think about reliability or what should I replace next.

We have a 2 car garage with a Toyota and a Lexus. Wifey says no more than 2 cars so who am I to argue.

Am set for the winter with awd, snow tires and enough metal between me and the half ton trucks. Next spring will be hard but I can't have everything.

I understand where you are coming from. The Boxster ownership was the best car experience of my life and I would not have changed a thing.

The beauty of these cars is that you can buy once and own forever if you want. They will always make parts for Porsches and they will always look timeless. After the first few years of fixing the bigger stuff and getting it paid off, they are not terribly expensive to drive and maintain...at least that's what I'm going with :cheers:

I have no intention of ever selling my 986. It is worth more to me than the $9-12k I could get for it, and I think the 986 specifically will become more of a classic with time. The 550 throwback design is timeless in my opinion. Plus, I love driving the damn thing.

I plan to promote my 986 to Garage Queen status before/around 100k miles.

My 2001 986 ousted my 2010 G-37 the first day I brought it home.
The Boxster has lived in the garage ever since.

I mean it already stays in the garage, maybe Weekend Warrior would be more appropriate. It will no longer be my daily driver once I hit 100k. :cheers:

This is the best way to own these cars: Wait for them to come off warranty, let the original owner take the hit on depreciation so that you get more car for the money, drive them for a couple of years A LOT. Sell them before major maintenance comes in. Let the next owner write the $5,000 checks. Rinse and repeat. Of course I did not follow my own advice.

Owning these cars long-term, no matter what kind of Porsche, is fine as long as it sits in your garage nicely waxed waiting for a perfectly sunny day.
Me, I think the whole point of a owning a Porsche is driving a Porsche. A LOT.
If I wanted to buy something so I could pat myself on the back about how much more its worth since I bought it, a car would be the last thing I use my cash for.
Which is why water-cooled cars are the best, and mid-engine water-cooled cars the best of all. Plenty of garage queens to be hunted, no need to worry about the value of the car going down because you added another 10K miles to the odometer and no leaks in your drive way or costly rebuilds as regular part of maintenance. If you wreck it on the street or track, you'll likely live (important) and replace the car in a matter of hours online.
For the lousy use of money a German sports car is, a water-cooled beater is the least lousy.

NOOOOO don't make it a garage queen. It needs to be driven regularly.
My belief is that there are more problems with garage queens than higher mileage cars that are driven

our plan is to keep my Boxster and the 996 Targa we just bought for our 2 boys. When we can drive any more, they will each inherit one.

They can battle it out who get which car, the 04 986 S 6-speed or the 04 996 Targa Tip.

I'm pretty sure my younger one who is 16 will want the Boxster and my 20 year old will want the Targa.

We let the 16 y/o drive the Targa and he said it was a little scary the power it had.

I appreciate the concern ;) and I agree! P-car's needs to be revved up and driven!

But I am planning to get a new daily driver in the next year or two, and keep the 986 for weekends and autocross. :cheers:

I was on a sailboat for seven days and I missed my car(s).
I had a 2006 BMW 325 6sp/sport package and I missed my Porsche. I needed AWD for winter, so I found a 1999 Carrera 4 to be my new DD! My world is complete. :D

You guys are worrying me, it already feels terribly off whenever I have to drive a friends Camry, focus, etc. I think I caught the bug too young, it'll be expensive to keep one of these suckers around at all times, good incentive to not have kids too young and have to trade the boxster in for an odyssey though!

After the way my Boxster makes me feel when driving it, I'll never be able to go without at least one.

I love the Boxster more than most, but I think that I could live without a Boxster. But I do not think that I could live without a Porsche. Or two. Or three...

I struggle selling my box everyday it sits in the garage. Unfortunatly that's 5-6 days a week since I now use the train to go to work
Of course I look for any reason to drive it and when I do it's usually 3-4 hours at a time
Then of course I could never part with it
I just keep thinking in a couple years it will be paid for
