2006 base base 987 price
Well....I'm looking at purchasing a brand new (ordering one) 987 base. And
when I say base I mean BASE!! Absolutely no options. I need to stay right at $41,000 and I believe I have a dealer who is willing to order a base 987 for this price. According to Edmunds, the invoice of this car is right around 40k (including delivery). Do you all think I'm reasonable in offering 41k? Thanks for any input. Georg p.s. I know there are a ton of options that would be nice to have or maybe even condsidered "must haves" (i.e. I'll buy the windstop at a later date). But I really need to stay at the 41k magic number. |
I don't know, Georg. My only comments are:
1) Any option you purchase "tommorow" will cost about 2-3 times what it will cost you "today" if you ordered it at the time of your initial factory order. Porsche charges a lot for Tequipment stuff and then the dealer wants money for labor. 2) Haven't you found any attractive 2005 left-overs within your budget? I would expect that you can get a better deal or better optioned car with the right 2005 purchase. Good luck! I hope you are in your dream car soon. :) |
Everyone has their favorite options it looks like yours is the car itself. It seems to me that you have an extremely generous dealer. At least you get to pick the exterior and interior colors and truely call it your own choice. I would also agree that the options will be very pricey after the fact. I guess i'd rather have the car and worry about the extras than not have the car at all. Have you checked dealer inventories to see what's available? In the end a base porsche is better than no porsche at all. Good luck and welcome to the board.

Here is an '05' in your price range.

Nice looking car with a few options. |
I would highly suggest buying a used one then! There are a ton of exceptionally-low -mileage 2005 Boxsters on eBay, for instance.

I agree with eslai - don't buy a bare bones porsche, just for the sake of owning a porsche! Your investment (and your enjoyment) will be greater with some options. That being said, though, I think the 987 has advantages over the 986 IMHO - however, I was originally looking at 04 986S models, as well as older 911's, M3's and the Infiniti G35 coupe to be within a certain price (mine was a gift from my wife - but we agreed on a set price range - this is somewhere in another thread) Like Dr Kill, we stumbled across an 05 that was left over stock with 06's on the lot and got a deal to die for!
Even doing the initial research before purchasing, I think the lowest I saw an 06 987 was mid $40000's, but this is southern California. I'd keep an eye out for remaining 05's or surf eBay. |
Thank you all for your advice! This forum is awesome!! I had the chance to
buy a 2005 987 (dealer service-loaner car) for 37,600 in December of 2005. But I wasnt ready to purchase then. It turns out that it would have been a killer deal in that it wasnt a base-base Boxster and it only had 4k miles. I'm gonna seriously consider that new 05 that mikenoh pointed out. I do have an offer from a dealer for a base-base 06 for $41,400. I've owned a 944 and a 914 (a nightmare!) so this 987 will be a DREAM!!! Keep the advice coming and I'll let you know when I finally purchase one. |
George: here's another one

My suggestion is that if you're hot on a leftover '05'--which I think is the best deal--you might think of doing something pretty quick. The inventory on '05's for both dealers has really shrunk in the last few weeks. Freddie Baker is a terrific dealer, BTW. Where are you located? Mike |

I've just spoken with Chris Austin (the sales manager) at Fred Baker. I've also
called about 4 other dealers with 05's but all of them were too expensive (cars that had too much equipment). The car at Fred Baker sounds just about perfect for me. The 05 that he has would invoice for a little over $39,000. The 06 invoices at $39,222. So these 2 cars are very comparable as far as price goes. The 05 has $1000 worth of options that the 06 does not have. But I'm also taking a bigger depreciation on the 05. I'm torn. However, my descision may be made for me because the manager at Fred Baker said that his car may be already sold. Someone put a deposit on it last night but it didnt sound like a solid sale. He will call me this afternoon and let me know. If its not sold, and I can get it for close to 39,999...I might have to jump on that deal. I need to run some resale numbers (what each car may be worth in 3 years). Wish me luck!!! |

I just don't get this depreciation comment. They are giving you a deep-discount on the 2005...right. Doesn't that wipe-out the depreciation, or most of it? Another thing about depreciation I just don't get is this example. Say you buy a 2006. And in 3 years it is worth X$ less. OK, so it is worth less in 3 years, that's deprciation...but you also got to drive and enjoy the car for 3 years! Nothing's free. And if customer "A" negotiates a better deals than another buyer, than customer A's car depreciates less. Right? |
The thing is, I'm coming to realize that I will probably want to sell the 987 in
3 years. I'm TERRIBLE when it comes to keeping cars...I always want something new. Smart? No...I consider it a "car disease". With that said, lets say I buy the 06 for 41k. In 3 years I think I can get 30k for my prestine, low mileage (garaged from nov-april) 06 Boxster. But if I buy the 05, in three years, I'll have a car that's a whole year older (worth maybe 3k less) even though I bought it new. Plus I have the wife factor to weigh. God bless her that she puts up with me through all of my porsche-talk. But I need to justify the numbers to her. It sounds like this is gonna be a wash. Yeah, I could get an 06 cheap...but it might be very hard to sell without any options. And I could get an 05 cheap, but it will be worth less in 3 years than the 06. SOOO I guess it really doesnt matter. sigh. I still cant believe I may be really close to getting a new Boxster!!!!! TOO COOL!!!! keep your ideas coming.... |
The other thing that I've learned is that the left-over 2005 vehicles do not have
the full 4 year warranty. Porsche basically screws the dealers, making them start the warranty prematurely. So I'm losing 6 months- 1 year in warranty on a "new" 2005. These cars were never titled or even demo'd, yet their warranty started before they were purchased. That's why there are still dealers out there with NEW 2004 Boxsters. The dealers cannot sell them (at least for a new car price). I was trying to deal on a new 2004 a month ago. I offered 35 and the dealer wanted 37. Neither of us would budge. You'd think one of us would blink. I'm as stubborn as they are ;) |
regarding the warranty..
if you're only going to keep it for 3 years, then the issue is mute, right? You'll probably still have some warranty on it to sign over to the new owner.
If you really need the full 4 years or more, the dealer should be able to come up with an extended warranty of some kind for the term you need. It may cost both of you something but you'll have the car and he'll have moved inventory. regarding comparable pricing, even if the invoices are close, I'd suspect he'd be willing to take less margin on the car he's been sitting on vs. a slot that hasn't been filled yet. Not much margin on a base car compared to an S with lots of gingerbread on it. Hope you get the '05'. |
