are these key tags ?
 

Still trying to get smart on the S I purchased this year. Going through the owners manual packet I found the radio code card and two other cards. These two cards are aprox. 1 " x 3 " and have part numbers 986.637.xxx.xx on them. The last two digits are different I'm thinking maybe these are the part numbers of the main key and a valet key ? They have a small hole on one end which I believe at one time had a key ring or tag in it. The car only came with one key Fob, it works fine and opens everything. But I want to get a 2nd key made. Yes I have read all the previous posts. Do these tags have any value for getting a 2nd key ? No I'm not going to throw them away.

It is used to have the key "FOB" programmed to work with your car. If they are working already then not much they would do for you, if you sold one of the key FOB to someone else they would require the serial number to have it reprogrammed for their car.

Anyway that is my take on it, I am sure others will chime in on the subject ;-)

The alphanumeric characters below the barcode must be programmed into the immobilizer in order for the FOB to lock/unlock the car.

Speaking of 'radio code,' I didn't find a card with that when I got my 2011 last week; is there some other place, like on the menu/radio display, that I can locate my code? Thanks.

I don't believe that they have a code anymore for 2003+. The radio checks the dme via CANBUS

Does anyone know the specifications of the 'oscillator' on the circuit board? I opened my key fob and the oscillator is missing. Please see attached pic with the two points marked up with circles. One of the micro-switches had come off so I soldered it (still need to clean out the pcb...). When I press the switches the LED does flash but none of the doors open. I think it is because I am missing the oscillator part.

I have just bought the 2004 Boxster and cannot lock it. Something is also wrong in the door lock mechanism as the key swings freely when put in the door. But that is another problem. Need to first fix the fob issue.

Also does anyone have a spare/junk pcb for the key fob (for a 2004 Boxster)?

That is not for an oscillator. That is there because that same PCB is used for two and three button remotes. With three button remotes, those two pads are not used. With the two button remotes, the outer four are not used.

It would also be good to check fault codes in the M535 module (immobilizer/alarm) and see if there is a problem. It might need a good idea to check to see if has gotten wet as well.

If that all checks out OK, you might try replacing the switches on the remote PCB. The ones you have look pretty ugly, I bet they are worn. I have seen some get flaky and not work probably even though the LED flashes.t. If you need switches, PM me. I keep those in stock.

If none of that works, you may need to buy a new remote. You don't need the key, just the transponder head, Swap over key blade and the "pill" from your current remote key. Then have a dealer or shop with factory tool or Autologic to program the car to it.

I had to replace one of my switches to rebuild one of mine
