Should we be replacing anything to avoid potential fire hazards?
 

Seems a Boxster caught fire here in Houston today. Porsche fire slows traffic on North Freeway

I know on the 914 you're just asking for trouble if you're still running on the original fuel lines....do our Boxster fuel lines degrade? Should they be replaced at some point? Or any other item of potential fire causing issues?

what I've always wondered is if you have an extinguisher handy, should you try and put the top in service position to put it out should you just run like hell. Assuming you have insurance for fire, I'm guessing the latter.

Run like hell. My life is worth more then the car. By the time you get the top in service position it's likily things are too far gone to amount to anything.

The only real chance you've got is to just spray the fire extinguisher directly into the passenger side air vent. The only thing in the way is a fan, otherwise it goes straight to the front/side of the engine. Then run like hell.

The only issue that I am aware of Boxster fires is from a failing power steering hose leaking power steering fluid onto the headers/exhaust which ignites causing a fire.

This mostly occurs to cars that are tracked when the potential for highly elevated power steering temps are more likely.

For a street car, inspect the power steering hoses regularly and you should be fine. For tracked street cars, the UDP is throught to help mitigate this issue by reducing the load, and therefore temps, of the power steering system. Dedicated race cars have the option to install a separate power steering fluid cooler along with the UDP.

Some cars have burned due to sucking up a lit cigarette in the driver's side intake.
